Here in my part of this great country (S. Calif) when I was growing up in the 40's 50's. almost all the farmers used crawler tractors for field preperation before planting. The wheel tractors were never used for this. From this sight I don,t see many crawlers used back then, in states west of Calif. I wonder why? Stan in calif.

Sometimes see some old crawlers out, and believe it or not, one's owned by an Amish fella. But, I remember when Cat first introduced the tracked Challenger, one was setting next to a monster of an articulated Stieger/Ford at the county fair, and the comparison between the footprint on the ground between 8 tires and those tracks was no comparison. The Challenger clearly had the advantage. More and more manufacturers have since unleashed tracked, Deere, IH Case Stieger. Guess an arguement could be made grabs better, and floats better so doesn't compact as much.

One thing's for sure Stan, I can't afford one. LOL.

Mark

It wasn't until the early 1960's when wheel tractors such as the 5010/5020. Had the weight, HP and tractor to pull large tillage equipment. As for soil compaction v.s crawlers today. A set of properly sized radials have only 7psi of ground pressure.

Longitudinally speaking, all of Alaska and parts of Oregon and Washington are west of California.

If you keep going west you will eventually run back into the east coast of the US so technically I guess there are states west of Cali.

Here in North Central Ohio there is a large potato farm some of the best flattest ground around and they used to and may even still use crawlers.

Saw many small crawlers in CA wine country only a couple of years ago. Since wet ground performance didn't seem to be an issue, I figured maybe soil compaction was the reason.

Small crawlers are used in vineyards for the reason you state. Because of the limited space wheeled tractors of equivalent hp with duels are not practical. If you check the Internet you'll see many manufactures of crawlers sell the orchard models that are narrow gage.

Undercarriage replacement cost is extremely expensive on crawlers. At the time, even the smallest Caterpillar and IH crawlers had more drawbar pull than the largest wheel tractors, I have seen pictures of a Cat D2 pulling a 4 bottom plow, whereas that would have been a good load for a John Deere 730. The cat could also have been used for deep tillage as most vegetable farming requires, with the large drawbar pull required and available with a tracked machine. Stability on slopes was a factor in favour of crawlers before duals and triples were popular.
Also, a crawler needs to be loaded before transport on paved roads, vs. rubber tired machines. Now high horsepower wheel tractors have sufficent drawbar pull plus the advantage of higher working speeds in the field, plus significantly lower purchase price.
