Starter doesn't engage

I have a JD 4020 gas. The starter has gotten to where it will engage the flywheel less than half of the time, otherwise it just spins. What needs to be done to the starter? Can I take it apart and clean it? Previous owner had a loader on it and the valve leaked and ran down on to the starter, it may be full of oil and dirt. Other than that what is wrong with it? I am probably going to pull it off and disassemble and clean it before I purchase a new starter.

First off after pulling the starter if it at all looks like a bit of dirt or oil on the bendix take a can of spray brake cleaner; $2 or less: and just wash it down very good and after it dries reinstall with all the bendix parts squeeky clean and try, do not oil, good chance that will take care of it and if not you are only out a couple of bucks and a little time and if it does not then it will be easier for the starter shop to repair

I have a JD 3020 gas that had the same problem. I found that it was not getting a full 12 volts to the solenoid part of the time. I found the problem by putting a volt meter on the "s" contact at the solenoid and the voltage there was lower than the voltage at the battery and also the voltage at the main contact on the solenoid. There was a wire in the starting circuit between the switch and the starter button not getting good contact. This is just something easy to check before spending money on other things that may not help.

It appears to me your problem is the bendix as you say it spins and want engage, you might try cleaning and oiling it ,or replace it , if you don't know what a bendix is then remove starter and it is on a shaft with a worm gear and rounded coil spring with a cog on the end that engages the flywheel !

You have a bad solenoid. There is a small contact that engages the drive first so the drive isn't spinning when the teeth engage the flywheel teeth, and then the main contacts engage that spins the starter motor. The small contact has brobably burned off.

Or, the "one way clutch" in the starter drive may be worn out, and not grabbing.

Thanks for the replies. Either way my option appears to be a new starter I guess.

Before I would buy a new one I would look around and find a repair shop for starters and stuff. They can rebuild it or just replace the bendix alot cheaper than a new starter.

It may not be the bendix. It could be the solenoid. They have a pull coil(pulls in the bendix) and a hold coild(holds the bendix in). The hold coil could be out in the solenoid. Does it act like it is bouncing in and then back out? My $.02 Keep us informed.
