Where to find good used tractors?

I've started a search for a small utility tractor with a loader and haven't had much luck yet.

I'm checking the local paper everyday, searching the thriftynickel online want ads within about a 200 mile radius, checking ebay and of course the YT photo ads. I've tried CaseIH online and ironsearch as well. I've found some but they are 1,000+ miles away, nothing close to West Texas.

I hear about people going to farm auction sales but I never see any flyers or ads for these around here. I see some farm auctions listed online but they are all old and far away.

Any other ideas on where to look?

Thanks, Nathan

You say small utility tractor. Utility tractors are made in 20 HP and up sizes, for some 20 HP is a small tractor, for others an 80HP is a small utility tractor so pick your HP requirements then figure what areas of country used that size and type of tractor and for some people even a 120 HP is considered a utility tractor so what HP are you looking for?

I always find what I'm looking for when I'm not looking it. Went to an estate sale the other day looking at hunting rifles, left with a nice fising boat. No rifles. Craig

I would try running a "Wanted" ad in your local shopper paper. You never know what some Widow might have sitting out in the barn. What you are looking for is a sought after commodity. I just came home from a estate auction 5 miles up the road, and they sold a 544 Diesel Utility w/ 3200 hours for $6100. Good Luck

Nathan, Don`t know what part of West Texas you are in but I came from cotton, watermelon, cantaloupe country around Pecos and there were a lot of larger tractors sitting around some of the farms no longer in operation a few years ago, that may go cheap if you want to chase down the owners. You may have to do a lot of restoration though. There seem to be a lot of smaller Ford N`s up towards Dallas/Ft. Worth that were used in the orchards around there. You might try your luck in locating antique tractor clubs that could give you a lead on one for sale.

Here in Missouri farmers normally don't get rid of them because they want a newer tractor they do it because they are wore out. Be patient or look for something new and you'll be happier.

Where are you?

There is a large auction each month in Seymour, I think it is the first Thursday. They have a web site.

Most consignment auctions are where the junk of the junk go to find their new homes. One dealer will take his unsellable junk there and usually some other dealer will grab it up, give it a coat a paint and sell it to some wannabee farmer or yuppie.
Most southern tractors have been operated by unskilled labor, and severely abused, and NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy anything that has come off a dairy.

I think you are pretty much covering all the bases as it is, utility tractors are not real plentiful. Be patient and keep searching.
