I'm looking for some advice on the purchase of a tractor. This will be my first tractor that I own, I'm new to the antique tractor craze but have finally found a tractor that I can afford (Two Baby boys, 22months and 2 weeks old, that eat you out of house and home don't leave a lot of extra money for toys). The ad reads "Antique Allis Chalmers needs restoring $800 disk included". I went to the owners housed and looked at the tractor I believe it is a model "B" late 40's or early 50's. The story is the tractor was the ladies ex-husband's grandfathers tractor. Her ex-husband "runnoft" several years ago and left the tractor (what a dummy). She nows nothing about the tractor including year or model except that it has been sitting under her lean to shed for about 15 years. 2 years ago her nephew put a battery in it and got it to start and drove it around the yard once. The tractor looks very greasy, lots of surface rust paint is about all gone and the tires are dry rotted, though still holding a little air, Tin is straight and complete. It comes with a pull type disk that has also been sitting in the same spot for 15 years but looks to be in good shape except for the surface rust. Questions!! Could this be a diamond in the rough?
Is this a fair price?...she hinted that she may take less!
Is it difficult to find a belly mower to fit it and how much would that cost?
P.S. My oldest son (22Months) is crazy about tractors too just like his daddy!

The serial number will be right in the vicinity of the gear shift lever. It will have a letter at the end- I can't remember which end which indicates the model- a "B" for example. The B is a fine tractor. One might wish for more transmission speeds. The hydraulics are minimal. The engine properly tuned may well be one of the easiest starting and best running engines ever.

A few years back I bought a '51 B as my wifes 1st tractor. It was complete w/good rear rubber, but it didn't run. Cost me $650. Got it home and found out it had been a basket case they had thrown together to sell it. After it was all said and done I had way more in it than I could possibly get if we sold it. A new woods 5' belly mower w/all hdwe is $1375 out the door here in Pa.
I almost never give what they are asking. Make what you think is a fair offer and see what happens. A while back I saw an Allis B w/belly mower in the photo ads. Asking price $1200.

I'm in Connecticut where everything costs 10-20% more than the rest of real world and I paid $1100 for a B with great paint, good tires and a tight engine and a snowplow. I would want a better tractor for $800 than what you are describing. Even if it runs like a top and you don't care about paint, tires are really expensive and if the old tires have calcium chloride, the rims might be rotted. On the other side, it is a great little tractor! Good luck! Steve

I have 2 model bs one running one not (yet). I converted to a three point hitch on the one that is running and use a 6' finish mower on it. I did this because it is much easier to take on and off than a belly mower. If I was to do it again I would go with the belly mower, the 6' mower is too heavy for the tractor, plenty of power and hydraulics but I can't keep the front end on the ground when I lift the mower. As far as price I really don't know,I am in Ohio,if it doesnt't need much mechanically that probably isn't too bad but there are other guys on here much more expert than I. Good luck they are great tractors, with a wide seat so your boy can sit right up there with you, at least till he is old enough to mow on his own then he won't want to go near it. Mike
