I"m in the process of researching for my next truck purchase. I"d love to have a Dodge w/ the Cummins diesel, but what about the V10 or 360/V8? Anyone have experience, good or bad, with these engines? Reliability, mileage, parts availability, etc. I"m hoping to find a manual trans, but have seen a lot of autos. Do the trans have any problems like they do behind the Cummins? Thanks for any and all help, Rich

Thanks for all the help, still can"t decide what I want, have to see what pops up I guess. I looked at that registry a few posts down, I could spend all day looking through there. Thanks again, Rich

I don't know about the diesel atomatics having problems. My 92 Dodge diesel has 230,000 miles on it with no problems. It may have been replaceed before I got it with 111,000 miles on it. I haven't been easy on it either. I get close to 20 mpg empty and around 15 mpg depending on the load and the number of hills. On heavy pulls I have to kick out the OD to keep the engine temp down. The engine has been tweeked also. The first Dodge diesel had some problems, but they fixed those.

I have a '98 Ram 2500 with the V10. It was special ordered new with the 3500 transmission.
No problems after 145,000 mi. The transmission
fluid and filter have been changed every 25,000 mi. It is a wonderful pulling truck. Pulling a tandem trailer, 10k load results in 10mpg. If I
drive it empty conservatively (60-65 on the hwy
and easy on the accel. and brakes, and not over 2000 rpm), I get 14 mpg.
I wouldn't use it for my every day truck, but for
a pulling beast it is great!.

I bought my 1996 cummins a little over a year ago.
My son's friend has a 96 cummins auto 4 wheel drive and pulls 34000# on a regular basis.
I'd guess your neighbor and one of mine would have the tranny on the ground in a couple of weeks, unless they drove it like this successful owner does. He doesn't drive with his toe nails clicking on the fan most of the time while going through the gears.
My 2 cents.

I had a '98 Dodge 2500 with 360 and automatic. It was an all right truck, but I did have a tranny failure at about 102,000. Then it failed again 14,000 miles later. I had it fixed again and it started making noises in reverse after another 15,000 miles.

The 360 struggled under a bid load (ie my 12' slide-in camper) so I sold the truck and bought a Chevy 3500 dually with 7.4L gas and automatic. It handles the camper 100% better. I can even go down the freeway at 70 mph in overdrive. The Dodge would not handle the camper in overdrive, always had to shift down to D. I think a big part of the problem was rear end ratio. The Dodge had 3.73 gears and the Chevy has 4.10.

Buy the truck that will do the job you need done and you'll be lots happier in the long run than if you save a few thousand and get a truck that can't quite do the job.

Hi Rich,
You can get a lot of info from the Turbo Diesel registry site. If you have specific questions on the 2001 Dodge 3500 with Cummins or the 2005 Dodge 3500, I might can help.

George

Another one too,

Good site....just sold my 01 Dodge Cummins this week with their free classifieds.
P.S. Only reason to by a Dodge truck is for the Cummins! If GM or Ford had the Cummins I would by them.....great engine.

From what I understand, the '94 and '95 models use a 47RH auto tranny, maybe the old ones use that one also, but don't know for sure. From '96 on they used a 47 RE tranny. The 47 RH is supposed to be the better of the two transmissions. I have 125,000 on my '95 w/diesel and have not had any problems, pull a gooseneck livestock trailer and 24 ft. triple axle gooseneck flatbed. I just had the fluid and filter changed and the mechanic said it looks and works perfect yet. He said once they get over 100 K on them to change fuild and filter every 20 K miles. He also said for $2000 he can rebuild them and put in a triple lock torque converter and put in 24 bands instead of the standard 9 and then you will have a tranny that will pull anything. Just my 2 cents worth.

Rich I have one of the first club cab 4x4's and it's been a good truck. I admit I have abused it, but have not had any major breakdowns other than the AC leaking. I have 190k+ on it. The only tranny problem I have had is the throttle position sensor has been replaced twice. It was $360 the first time but since I now know the symptoms I can do it myself. Just replaced a water pump so far. I'm do for some tranny PM right now. I've never taken it out of overdrive hauling, but it's pretty flat around here. It's a '95 model I got in Oct. of '94. The gas gauge on a V10 will drop so fast it'll bounce when it hits E.

My auto coupled behind that cummins in my '02 2500 4x4 extended was rebuilt at 25K (lost 2 - 5), and those were easy miles. Truck has 48K on it now, and I have yet to miss a scheduled maintanence at the Dodge guy's place. Is a nice truck and that cummins can surely pull, but the autos on Dodge 4x4s are a weak link. 10 year 100K bumper to bumper including drivetrain, and the Dodge guy gave me no problem and asked no questions. I've got a '96 manual with 225K on it that gets used every day and has yet to have a problem. I have a customer that has a fleet of 360 2500 regular 4x4s equipped with the same auto and they've gone through the same exact problem on half of theirs as well, and they are lite duty as well - pretty much only used for safety safari vehicals at a race track - that's pretty lite duty if you ask me.

My guess is as manufacturers must raise the fuel milage, and weight gets cut, so does duarability (any manufacturer). Nice trucks otherwise. Go with the manual, or go with an aftermarket build on the auto, says I.

I have a 1996 Ram 2500 4x4 ext cab. 360 gas automatic with 160,000 miles on it. It had 85,000 on it when I bought it . My tranny is just now acting up but still works. This has been the best truck I've owned. I have had a couple of chevy's and fords too. You will be very surprized at how good the 360 will pull, but if you are going to pull alot get the Diesel. I would not even consider a V10 with the gas prices of today. I get 12-14 mpg driving to work and running around town. I have never went on a trip empty. I can push alot of gas through it with a load lowest was 7.5 mpg. This is with a 25 foot tamden dual gooseneck 5000-6000 lbs ?and a tractor around 7000 to 8000 ? pounds this is way over gvw,but this Dodge handled it fine on light hills. For heavy hauling often and in hills get the Diesel.

Both of those engines are good, reliable engines assuming they have been taken care of. Neither will garner points for gas mileage though.13-18 for the 360,8-14 for the v-10,the diesels will average 16-22. The automatic behind the v-10 is the same one used behind the cummins. It is a good transmission, the majority of problems people have with them,is usually attributed to improper maintenance. They overload the trucks, don't service them and adjust the bands, when they are supposed to,don't take them out of OD,and overheat them. They are better than the transmissions that Ford uses, and alot cheaper to repair than the quasi-allisons that GM uses. I have 3 Dodge diesels, the oldest a 1993 with 266,000 miles and just had the trans rebuilt for the first time at around 235,000. The other 2 have over 150,000 with the original transmissions.
