Moldboard Plowing - How to Publication

I'm looking for a publication that used to be a textbook for General Ag students 40+ years ago called "Plow How". I am an extension engineer for the University of Delaware and several of our growers are having trouble teaching the younger employees basic plowing techinques. If I could find a copy of this publication it would save me from having to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Thanks.

Hope you found a copy, I looked some more and finally gave up. Since it hasn't been located, I'm not sure it was that particular book, but it was a complete book on plowing. It's discovery will have to wait until I retire next year, and have the time to organize this mess. In reality, the JD books probably give enough information, and a lot of individuals seem to have them.

What you are talking about reminds me of a book put out by John Deere, about 1954, called something like "Care and Repair of Farm Machinery". Just checked my office, but did not find it- I know I have a copy, and will check the basement storage later. It did detail plowing as well as other farming operations.

I have this book; it does cover some of basic issues with plowing, it has sketches of the plowing patterns around the field and the headlands, but I wouldn't consider it a plowing book. Most of it has to do with the care and use of the farm equipment; all JD.

I believed I had your book, was positive I've seen it somewhere, but so far have only found the JD book others have mentioned, and IH's "Better Plowing". Will look some more.

I understand your question.
Never heard of "Plow How".

Like mentioned below, Deere use to put out a book on general farming. I have 4 copies. Look for one on e-bay.

I suppose that I wasn't clear in asking my question. I'm not looking to learn how to use any particular type of plow or observe how its done at a competition, I am hoping to find a specfic reference manual on headland layout and how it affects the plow pattern for the following season. The function and operation of the implement itself is not that important and, as mentioned, can be obtained through most operators manuals. I hope to use the theorys presented in the "Plow How" textbook to help our growers train their employees. Thanks

Have you considered any operator's manual?
The basics should be applicable to any make of plow. Depending on whether your plow is mounted, pull, or semi-mounted would be the determining factor.

I live just west of Des Moines, Iowa. Where is this plowing contest, haven"t seen any adds for it in the local papers. If I don"t have to work that weekend, I might try to go. Thanks

Moldboard plowing is definately not a thing of the past in this area. Most of the processing vegetable crops grown here require plowing to minimize disease (in double cropped plantings) and eliminate the trash pickup problems asscoiated with the mechanical harvest of lima beans, peas, and pickling cumcumbers. This area has a high percentage of vegetable crops grown due to the sandy soils, proximity to east coast markets and the wide spread use of center pivot irrigation. Some of the vegetable growers I work with are moldboard plowing 6-8 thousand acres per season.

I guess I'm a little lost here, if your growers are allready plowing 6-8 thousand acres, you'd think they would be able to teach their employees how to do it. Its such an easy thing to teach. The part you are looking for that is. If the grower is going to hire someone so green as to not understand those basics, I'm not so sure a book would do any good. Perhaps if you have access to a video camera and could spend a day plowing for the camera, you could turn a buck or two with the video. But still, if I come accross it or a way to buy the book, I'll sure pass it on to you. Have you allready tryed amazon and barnes and noble stores? I found some books about agriculture and machinery at powells books that have'nt been in print for quite some time, maybe they could help find one.

Harvesterguy, Some of the farmers here in Illinois
have been plowing the no-till ground due to compaction and insects. We plow about 100 plus acres with 30-40 antique tractors every October-November.We plow deep 6-8in. and try our best to do a good job.It is a lot of fun.The email I sent you about the book has a F-30 & 3btm plow on the cover. I kinda thought plowing was a thing of the past ? Or is this a history class ? Anyhow you may be able to find that book on ebay or I think John Deere had some old books that also dealt with general farming you may be able to find one.

Still a fair amount of plowing going on here, due to vegetable production.
