problem with 3 point hitch and pto

Would like to know if anyone knows why my pto has to be on to make the hitch work this has a lever for the pto to be in or out if you move lever just a little it will go up without the pto being on. What is the problem?

If it is a Deere utility,it could have a cut oring on the pto valve,split gasket,a cracked hydraulic tube,or a blown pto brake seal. This is fairly common,as the tractors get older.This is just a quess,since you didn't specify make/model.

Can not answer your question with out knowing what tractor you have. I'm guessing its one of the ford Ns and if it is you need to pto on for the 3 point to work the hyd pump is run off the pto
