Was down in Implement alley and someone from Wisconsin was talking about Wisconsinites..... .

If they had been talking about a Texas person it would have been Texans.

So hows come they call Okies..... .SOONERS ???? LOL...Just curious....not much going on tonight.

Here is one for you guys....I live in OK, born in Tejas and raised some in Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma! Friday it was right at 100 degrees, I was changing tires on a tractor AND a sprayer (of course I did cause both flats) and when I got back to the house, I had to fix supper for my HUBBY and kids. Sugar, let me tell you, it was danged hot out there, bless my heart. Have a nice day - and no, I ain't a Sooner - I went to the REAL school here in OK - that would be OK STATE - and yes, I am called a redneck, a hillbilly and other things I can't put down here, but I am a southern lady and proud of it!

When I was in Texas for a visit, a few years back, I heard tell a story of Northerners being described as being like hemorrhoids: They were ok if they came down for a while, but if they came down and stayed, they were a pita.

Let's see here..... ..Folks from Florida are called Floridians.....simple enough. Folks from Ohio are called Buckeyes, not as simple. And people from California are called Prune Pickers, quite difficult.
By the way, similar to you I'm only about 10 miles from the river. Only thing is, it's the Rio Grande....not the Red River. And since you live up thar so far north, I assume you know what they say about why Texas doesn't slip off into the Gulf Of Mexico. Because Oklahoma sucks..... .and keeps it in place.

Well George, I was born in Houston and raised thereabouts, and for the longest time I was afraid my siblings would refer to me as a "yankee" also, being I was now residing up heah. Grin.

My mom grew up in Oklahoma, so I happen to know this one. Oklahoma was originally set aside for indian reservations. In 1889, it was opened up for homesteading, and there was a "land run" where settlers literally raced across the state to stake out the best land. Quite a few of the homesteaders snuck across the starting line early so they could grab the best ground. These cheaters were called "sooners" because they got to the best land sooner than everyone else. The practice was so widespread that eventually all Okies were called "Sooners".

That's the way I heard it. The bad part was (as I recall) they had to live on it and farm it and that must have been an ordeal..... like it was for all (most all I'm sure) farmers of the time.

Can you emagine plowing Allan's 200 acre hay patch with one mule and one moldboard plow..... .and no beer? (Ha).

And then there was the dust bowl days of the '30's (as I recall the date).

We're getting closer (you're one state away). I know there are some Okies who frequent this site. Maybe I'll get whacked by one of them. Grin.

Beins I'm 30 miles from the river, there's quite a bit of co-mingling around here and we do as all rivals do....heckle and jeckle each other. Grin.

I read in a Reader"s Digest way back in the 50"s that the southerners called anyone from the north Yankees, that people from the north called people from the north east Yankees, that to people in the north east a Yankee was someone from Vermont, and to someone from Vermont, a Yankee was someone who ate pie for breakfast. Y"all have a good week.

We still call the yankee immigrants that come and stay "carpetbaggers" LOL. The ones from the south earn the right to be here..... I guarantee you. That is one bunch of hard working folks that don't get adequately compensated for their efforts.

Case in point...new city street in local city. 2 pm on a July afternoon. 103 in the shade. Guess who's out in the street laying decorative bricks for peanuts? Clue. First name probably starts with a J pronounced like an H.

Good point but the ones we get from up north seems to be know it all's, so I just ignore them like everyone ignores me. And the one's from south of the border are hard workers, but so am I. It was over a 100 degrees here a few weeks ago, I had work to do , so I done it.

It has to do with the way OK was settled. Remember that the government gave away land to the people and that everyone was supposed to line up and wait for a specific time and then everybody raced to plant their flag on a plot of land on a first come-first serve basis. People who crossed early and were caught could be shot.
Unfortunately, many people DID get over the line early and were not caught. My history lessons taught me that those who got over the line to "SOON" ended up with a lot of land and were hence the people who settled OK...."SOONERS"
