At the Mid-Michigan Old Gas Tractor Club show two summers ago, my two daughters persuaded me to allow them to bring home a cute little fuzzy duckling which has grown into the monster pictured here. They still love the heck out of him but, unfortunately, he loves the heck out of my silky chickens. Seems that being raised in a pen next to the silkies he now thinks he IS a silky. This would not be a problem except the silkies are scared to death of him and rightly so if you check out the picture. All day long I'll hear the chickens hollerin and I just know that duck is outside the pen again. To make a long story short, I need a couple of Muscovy hens to get our ducky back on the right track. If anyone has a couple they can spare, I have actually given ducky his own email and you can contact me there. Happy to come get them, whatever....just need a couple of Muscovy hens. As much as it may sound like one, this is not a joke.

Then there's the one about the plight of the farmer with a pasture on an island 1/2 mile off the coast of Newfoundland, near St. John's:

A young moose had somehow made its way across the water to the island and joined the farmer's herd of beef cattle. This went fine until the calf discovered that he was a male and started mating with the cattle. This made the St. John's papers and much merriment ensued until a pub group named What's His Name and the Other Fellers recorded the song, "If You Can't Be With The Moose You Love, Love The Cow You're With."

I've seen this type of trouble before with single pets- one of a flock/herd critter tries to bond with whatever other critter is around. Dogs bonding to human seems acceptable- a single pig in the house gets messy. Horse people sometimes get a companion goat for the horse when they can't work with the horse a lot. Single turkey hen pet used to half nest with Pekin drake. Get a pair at a time and have less hassle. Good luck with the duck hunt. RN

I had a pet Mallard "Winnifred" Winni "loved" My farm cats....litterally. It finally got to the point where the cats were almost bald and you really didn't wish to pet them. I finally got him a couple of hens. Being raised with cats he didn't have a clue what ducks were and the hens scared the H3ll out of him. The hens were out of their ellement and would run toward him because they saw another duck. He looked at them and just saw strange creatures running at him. It was a circus. I thought if I locked them up... well he about killed himself throwing himself at the window of the coup. It was a bout 3/4 year before nature told him what to do. Besides he had been weened from the cats and didn't have an opposable thumb.

Personally - and don't tell ducky this... I don't know what they see in the guy. Does he have money??
Sorry - Do you have a zoo anywhere close. Those muscovys are pretty prolific and they might have a couple they'll give you. Also try any local city parks dept. If there's a city park with a lake. A lot of times they'll give them to people just to keep the population (and ducky doo doo) down.
