Hey all I am considering trading my truck and was wondering about the fuel consumption and dependability of the new, quieter, Duramax diesels from GM. I have a 1/2 ton chevy now (2001) with the 5.3 engine it does ok on fuel but lacks power and the truck itself has not been the best chevy I have ever owned so I am thinking now, while everything is working properly, it might be time to trade.I drive about 70 miles a day to and from work and a couple times a year I tow an 8,000 pound load most of the time I tow smaller stuff. just want to know what to expect if I trade. Thanks JDMAN

My 05 3500 Chevy will get 21-22 at 60 mph and 12-14 pulling a 12000 lb load. It is a reg cab long box SRW. Powertrain is Duramax, Allison, and 3.73 rear and 4WD. Empty, it's like driving a Corvette with an 8 foot box!! No problems in 4000 miles, and there shouldn't be.

My neighbor has the same truck, Duramax with extended cab, 2500. He says he gets 22MPG on the freeway. I would think that city driving is much less. My wifes 2004 Jeep Lib. gets 22MPG.

if your only pulling that little of weight (little for a diesel pickup) i would recommend a 2500hd w/a 3.73 or 3.43 rear end. you dont need or want the higher 4.11 for your use. a few hundred rpms over the course of a week will add up to less revs less fuel if your not pulling great weights you dont need a 4.11

The friend who fixes my Toyota is a top GM technician and we were talking about that engine Thursday night. He says the engine is built in Japan (by Mitsumi, if I recall correctly)and the transmission innards somewhere offshore, as well. GM builds the case and the controls, and that is all he has ever had to fix on one. (For the last two years this guy has won free vacations as the top GM automatic transmission technician in Canada.)

He has observed 24 miles per Imperial gallon in that model unloaded, and claims it is superior to the earlier GM diesel which in his opinion gave "lousy mileage, worse than my gas pickup."

In all, he shows a lot of respect for that engine/powertrain, and such compliments are rare coming from this source.

I thought it was an Isuzu diesel.

It could well be: I wasn't taking notes and it was a Japanese manufacturer other than one of the big four.

2004 Gmc 2500 HD ext cab long box 10,000 miles so hardly broke in. Pulling 27000 gross getting 12-13 including over the mountains and 17-18 empty almost regardless of conditions. Great power and will get better as we get more miles on it. My dad has 2003 Chevy 2500 ext cab long box with 2 wheel drive and 170,000 miles on it delivering travel trailers all over U.S. and Canada and getting 11-12 loaded and 20 empty. Pretty good combination with Duramax and Allison Trans. Migaine

I have a 2005 2500HD crew cab short box with a cap on it. I drive it unloaded most of the time and get 21-22 mpg @ 60 mph and 19-20 mpg @ 70 mph. My father has a 2005 2500HD ext cab long box with no cap and pulls trailers most of the time. With a 10,000 lb trailer in tow he gets between 11-15 depending on the wind. We both are really happy with the power.

Duramax engine is made by isuzu. I have a 2002 duramax, crew cab, 2500, long bed, 4x4 with the allison trans. I get 17 miles per gallon driving the heck out of it. Have got as high as 21.5 all highway keeping my foot out of it. 13mpg towing. Have 85000 miles on it and it runs like a top, lots of power, no problems. My 1994 chevy 6.5 diesel had 160,000 miles on it & still ran great. 16 - 17 mpg.

The block and heads are made in japan, then shipped to Dayton ohio where all the machine work is done.It is an Isuzu design though.
