Anyone know of a program for a personal computer that will help keep track of parts, labor, and progress when restoring my 4 antique tractors when I retire?

Spreadsheet app. Most common would be Microsoft's Excel.
Save yourself alot of cursing and buy one of the easy learn guides at the bookstore. Then actually read the dern thing. I've had more people ask me how to use software that have never opened the stinking manual than I can shake a stick at...

I use Excel to track EVERY expense down to the penny (including trailer rentals and such) - I want to know exactly what I spent on each of my three tractors I have done so far. Also, I keep lots of progress pictures in a folder dedicated to each tractor. I currently have a website up from my latest "Project".

Good luck,
Dan

So give us a ballpark figure of what it takes to restore a total rustbucket.

I got the tractor for $650 delivered 250 miles to my door and my running total is just a smidgon over $5k. Most of that was machine shop work, but that includes a complete transmission guts replacement, full engine overhaul with a valve job, machine shop work, New axles and hubs, new rubber all the way around, a boatload of new parts, paint, and many cases of beer :-)

Not to mention the invaluable knowledge and experience I gained by taking apart every bolt and putting it back together correctly.

Some previous excellent advice. Why would you want to go and ruin a perfectly good hobby?

Shouldn't take anything more than Microsoft Excel or Access. Either one can be used to track costs, make notes, etc. Just takes a little familiarity with it. I just threw a sample one together in a few minutes using Excel. If you'd like me to send you the file email me, bob@ebbsspeed.com, and I'll get it out to you.

I do like to take digital pictures of my progress for the before and after surprise. Then put them in a folder in my computer. I also keep a running total in my head sorta. which end the end I guess all I remember is the hardest to find, most expensive item and then try to remember what the cost was and where to find it in case someone here ask for help. I do keep all my receipts for tax and other reasons but I never have totaled them up! I do know getting one done is Priceless! Richard

You could even get started just using Microsoft Word. Even WORD has simple tables where you can total up columns of money, hours etc. And if you are taking pictures you can imbed them in the document or link to them.

Time would be better spent working on the tractors. Leave those worms alone and get started on them.

There was a great thread awhile back on the same subject- the overwhelming majority of replies (and there were many) were split between "I don't wanna know" and "I don't want Mama to know". In my business, we're always touchy about leaving incriminating evidence laying around. If I hear of such a program, I'll do you a favor and keep quiet about it.

I think that it is important. When the tax man comes its nice to know what is invested. Not important unless you auction and the auchioneer turns in his proceeds to the IRS.
