I'm looking for a new refrigerator and I'm wondering what brands seem to be more reliable then most of the brands out there right now. What brand do you suggest?

Rod, Have you tried Sears Brand Central? They carry nearly all the top brands, and will match any price of other retailers. The real kicker though is that they have their own trained service technicians, so customers dont have to revert back to the manufacturer if there is a service or performance issue. They also do not farm out their service to an independant contractor who may or may not be up to date on all the technical data. I"ve been through the service process, Sears and otherwise, and will take the Sears program anyday. There are a few Maytag stores who provide their own service, but they are few and far between, and not available in a lot of rural areas. Sears is everywhere. Gosh, I hope Sears compensates me handsomly for this plug.

Here's another vote for G.E. One came installed in a trailer I bought in '69 and it was still going strong when I junked the whole shebang thirty years later. (I did have to put in one condenser fan motor though.)

Count my vote with the rest. I think GE makes a good fridge. I have one (it says JC Penny on the front, but it"s made by GE), that"s over 20 years old, and still works. My only complaint---ice makers aren"t worth .02, and last only about 4-5 years.....

Funny you should ask. I sell appliances. Maytag owns Dixie Narco. They are the ones who makes all those soda pop vending machines you see every day in front of Wally World, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. They work in extreme conditions 12 months every year. However, up until recently, the Maytag Brand was made in the Admiral Plant, a different company than Dixie Narco. Now they are made in the Amana Plant, a much better choice in my humble opinion. To the best of my knowledge, most compressors today are piston (reciprocating) driven. The rotary (radial)design was a bad design and cost GE over 80 million bucks in recalls in the late '80's.
Me? I just replaced my 18 year old GE (piston driven) refrigerator with a new GE. My old one is still doing service in my basement when we have a get together. I like it. A lot.

I would have to agree with T bone, that is why I went with the Maytag I have now, those compressors if they were done right at the factory almost go forever, well not quite but better than the others, I remember the family farm auction, there was the refrigerator that had been there since before world war 2 and it was still going, not the most efficient thing, but it still worked, the freezer did too, they were both purchased at the same time, and used the whole time, you don't see stuff work that long now, but it will work longer than the alternative..

Hi Rod,

Stay with only piston compressors. No radial compressores from any mfg. Very easy to tell as the piston compressors will be oval shapped where radial comp will be round in body style.

MayTag, Whirlpool, GE would be my choice. There was only four mfg left in the early 90's. I have no idea how many there are now.

We just bought a Maytag from Lowe's. Dunno who made it. Seems to be ok but it's new. Who knows.
