I have a massey harris 30 tractor with a centrifugal belt-driven governor that locks up in the fast position when i attach the oil bath air cleaner to the carburator, if i take the air cleaner off the caburator the engine runs rough and shoots fireballs out of the caburator but the governor works then. What"s my problem?

Sounds like a tuning problem to me, I"d start with spark, make sure the timing and dwell are where they"re supposed to be and you"re firing on all cyl.

Then adjust the carb, check for leaks, maybe check the valve adj. if a basic tuneup doesn"t work.

Could also be a stuck intake valve, doubt it"s strictly a governor problem given the symptoms, more like the governor is having trouble because something else isn"t right.

oops!, my bad, i forgot to mention that the engine in my tractor is a car engine and that the carburator is a 2 barrel style, and i know nothing about it. When i try to overide the governor by speeding it up with my hand, i can hardly push it because it is so stiff, i thought this might help.
