I just bought a 55 john deere combine. It isn't charging, and I want to put an alternator on. I just put an alternator on our AC D-19, so I know how to do it, but it was negative ground. My question is- when switching from positive ground to negative ground, besides switching around the terminals on the battery, what else do I need to do? Thanks in advance.

Brett

Do you need another 55 for parts? I have one in north central Kansas. Grain tank bottom is rusted out.

Here is a link to some wiring diagrams that have been very helpful to those who work on the red tractors. The alternator conversion diagrams would apply to just about anything.

Brett if it is a gas engine you need to reverse small wires on ignition coil. Tx Jim

You would also need to switch the terminals on the guages I think, and atleast have to re-polarize the regulator if not replace it, unless you're going w/ an internal regulator model.

Thanks Don, I forgot all about the terminals on the gauge, I'd a wondered what was wrong when I got everything hooked up and the gage showed a discharge! Also the alternator has an internal regulator so I don't think you have to polarize it.

If installing an alternator he will use a different regulator. Besides, witha generator it isn't the regulator you are polarizing, it is the generator. The regulator is designed to work with either pos or neg ground but cannot be changed as far as I know.
