been having a slow year for'em. Suddenly this week killed 3 near the house. Only copperheads but still scary. All after recent cloudburst-gullywasher. Maybe the wet weather brought 'em out. Anybody else notice a trend?

Ain't seen a snake this year but got plenty of ants and a few bear tracks. Killed a couple of snakes last year, they got in my way ,no respect. Summer time snakes like cool shaded places, especially when it's hot and dry, and looking for something to eat. They say throwing out a little sulfur will keep them away from your house and buildings. Poison snakes around here stay in the woods and ditches.

Two facts[?]I heard lately:only ten people a year are killed by poisoinus snakes in the USA.Most people that are bitten by a snake are intoxicated.Dont know where I heard that.

Dr.S, maybe they just drank some "Snakebite Remedy" after they got bit.... Joking aside, I once read something similar, it said that lots of bites are caused when people are drinking, & start trying to handle or bother the snake... I guess they must have more courage then.....

Ya but,99% of the crashes on the freeway are SUV by young women talking on cell phone,i see it every day so don't argue with me. for some reason the suv gives them the power to run everyone else off the road . it's funny to me when i see a suv crash,85% of the time it is their fault. It's like mr. or ms. bad a$$ in their bad suv ,so get out of my way cheap farmer in your low rent pickup. my insurance rates are cheap . be glad when the day stupid a$$ in their shinny suv are over with. i will probably be dead then. you ever thought about why common people want to look so important, beats me , they ought to drive cheap vehicles and just go home and take care of their family instead of riding around trying to make an impression.

Newman, Newman, Newman. Granted, a lot of incidents involving "SUVs" are operator caused, and perhaps even most. However, don't be so quick to judge the motives of owning a "SUV".

I recently dated a lady that owns and drives a "SUV", although their is nothing sporty about it. Their were two reasons that she has and drives her non-sporty '98 Tahoe. First, for the safety of her two children, whom she doesn't want to entrust to "a cheap vehical", as you put it. She would prefer to have a heavier, beefer vehical to get her and her children home safely than a Yugo, Neon, and ... and whatever else type of "environmentally friendlier" low dollar tin coffin on wheels others feel comfortable driving, do drive, and could offord to do so, so she did. Her choice. That to me is admirable, and very thoughtful on her behalf. Secondly, she has a horse that she moves from place to place on occasion, such as the 4H fair that just ended today for my county, Elkhart. She probably would be better served having a 1 ton dually with a larger trailer that includes a tack room and sleeping quarters, but she does what she can offord, and no Yugo, Neon, ... is gonna pull even the smaller trailer that she currntly has, and certainly not safely if one of them can.

Sometime back, a good friend here to us all, TXGRN, although at the time, TXBLU, gave me a good reminder, kind of a wakeup chop across my chops, when I slammed someone for paying something like $17K for a 3010. He basically countered with "it's their money, they earned it, let 'em use thier money as they see fit". Mark was 100% correct, and I was rightfully humbled, as I deserved it.

And one last thing. I remember watching her put on makeup the night before a date, or after showering in the morning, and it was well worth the price of admission, that I can guarantee anyone.

Man I had to laugh at your response. I'm still laughing as I type.

When I wrote that response I was still sizzling over my JD 4230 purchase that I had wanted for 25 years and after that long I figured that I had earned the right to have it. I know I paid more for it than I could sell it for, but that wasn't the point. I wanted it for me....and I love it.

I'm still laughing.

Anyway, thanks for the kind understanding. Appreciate your candor.

Mark, I will never forget that subject, and you put it very well. I'll never be too old to learn, nor too old to be humbled, my friend.

Besides, I helped out a friend going through a divorce, bought his '80 950, with a bushog, back blade, loader, and tire chains for $6,200. I knew it wasn't worth it, and didn't even like it, but figured I could use it's small size for things that can't use a bigger one for. Just cost me another $4,700 in transmission repairs. That puts that thing right around $11K. Think I aint married to that thing? LOL. Someone just recently posted asking the value of one, and someone replied had been seeing them go for around $3.5K. As they say, "till death us do part". LOL.

Anytime Mark, I always appreciate your kind, thoughtful words and friendship.

Mark

Last year coperheads were the most common snakes I saw. Sometimes seeing 2-3 a day, but this year I've only seen 2, both very large. Black or rat snakes I've seen plenty. I've atributed the lack of them (copperheads)to the dry weather assuming they have migrated to damper local areas nearer their food sources. I'm sure around the pond or springs they're there..

I killed a copperhead on our property about three weeks ago. He had come out during a long dry spell--probably looking for water. I can live with the black racers and hog snakes around here (NW FL panhandle), but those copperheads are a mean and aggresive bunch, also very tough hides. Tough to kill with a shovel or something like that. My weapon of choice is a 12 gauge.

Those hurricanes bring the marsh rattlers out too don't they? I know on our coast we have lots of those guys. Used to bird hunt down there within spittin distance of the beach (private propery) and had a lot of very large sage brush. Rattler behind every third one..... grin.

I remember in '67 when Aubrey hit Cameron, LA. they said that as many people were killed by snakes as by drowning. Seems the shakes were competing with the humans for anything that would float.....whadda mess.

I posted about Mice problems a few days ago, I didn't say anything about Snakes in the post, but they are my main concern. When you see more Mice than normal in the field, and not as many Hawks zipping along 5-6 feet above ground hunting them, and not seeing the Coyotes and Bobcats but ever now and then. Watch out for the next few years, Snake's are comming to the rescue. I can't hear a Diamond back, and have never been bit, came dang close though.

I have seen more mice this year than any other year. No snakes to speak of. I killed one rattle snake this year. I saw a hawk fly off with a gopher snake. So from what you say there will be more snakes in the comming year. Will be on the lookout next year. stan

Have some neighbors who said the same. One particular lives in the woods near a creek.

I went online and checked up on the Copperhead and there is some real interesting info out there about them.

If you have the potential for that snake might check it out.
