I am going to put in about 50 to 80 feet of feed troughs this fall and have the capability to fabricate steel. I"m looking for good ideas on what to make them out of or is it better to just purchase some, if so, what kind? Any thoughts and ideas are greatly appreciated.

Having BTDT and even using old hot water heaters for their porcelain interior, I like the fabric lined ones that TSC advertises. Have seen them used around here on big operations and they seem to hold up to the weather and abuse very well.

How many, what are you feeding, etc? Making one 50' trough is different than 10 5' troughs. What you need to stand up to hogs is different than the needs for sheep. There's other variables as well.

Rotting feed and cleanup is a substantial problem in wet areas. Consider how the water will drain, and how you're going to clean out the trough. Things like PVC pipe sections tip and wipe out easily, but don't drain on their own. Wood can drain easily, but doesn't wipe down as easily and can get quite heavy. Cement lasts forever, but you're never going to move it.

I like wooden ones myself. 24" wide, 8" deep, 12' long made out of white oak 2x8's. Got some outside for 17 years and still good as new.

Here in central Kansas there seems to be an abundance of used high pressure gas pipe that runs mostly in 24" and 30" diameter. It can be cut into sections and split. Some people just set them on 55 gallon empty barrels lying flat for a base. The weight will mash the barrels down and then the bottom of the bunks stay about a foot off the ground. Makes super heavy duty bunks that will last forever. Kinda pricey at the beginning but they will last forever and they always resale extremely well (here in Kansas, anyway). Just one idea. Good luck.

I've heard of old elevators with the chains, paddles and under carriage removed.
