This doesn't specifically involve a tractor....yet. If I don't do this right, we might be dealing with a crashed tractor...

Dexter brakes on a gooseneck trailer? How long should they last? (Miles? Fairly large amount of stop-and-go city driving/ lots of highway miles) Maybe 7500 miles so far. Adjusters are cranked out about as far as I want to go with 'em.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Hi IDF,

I would think they should have easy lasted longer than that. I just bought a new trailer with Dexter dual tandum, forward self adjusters, and used the trailer brakes heavy for 2k miles as I use trailer brakes more than TV brakes.

It'll be awhile but I'm going to buy new shoes and some spare parts now for future replacement and I'll measure the new shoes vs the 2k used shoes and let you know the difference.

I sure hope I get more than 7.5k miles from a set of shoes. From past experience, I agree with BFO, about 30k miles on shoes.

I usually get 30-40k, then chuck the backing plate and turn the drums. Used to get more from the old Hayes components

I've had a lot of trouble with dexter axles over the years, mostly on corn pro trailers. The earlier ones had problems with the brakes dragging and the adjusters worked backwards from other axles, they adjusted while going forward, most self adjust when applied in reverse.
A friend had two axles replaced for free when he
threatened to sue.The 9000# axles were probably the worst.

Sounds short lived to me.Slight dragging would eat em up though.Dexter is a large and reliable company, might not hurt to get their input.Maybe something in the system is causing them to not release fully or such.

If your hardware is good try checking magnets. With drums off apply power to magnets, hold a screw driver across mag check if it will hold it. If ajusters are maxed replace shoes.
