O.T. Lincoln Continental?????

My son just bought a 71 Lincoln MKIII.has a 460ci that he wants to restore(please dont ask me why.LOL.)He asked if he needed to run leaded gas I told him ya cant get it,but ya can get lead additive.Told him to try unleaded and see if it pings.Now my question is,should he run hi-octane or start with a small amount of low octane and see how it runs,also where does the octane rating come in whether he uses an lead additive or not?

71 was pre unleaded,however some mfgs were already preparing for the unleaded fuel by lowering compression,changing tuning and installing hardened valves/seats,Unsure of just when Ford began.He needs to check the specs on his particular engine to determine compression ratio.General rule of thumb used to be that a carburated engine below 8.5:1 would handle unleaded fuel though premium fuel/timing adj may be required to minimize pinging.If going"in depth" on his restoration such as rebuilding the engine,hardened valves/seat could be installed or possibly newer cylinder heads as the 460 was around for many years.Also the additives available are not tetraethyl lead but a mix of other chemicals to modify the fuel detonation and slow valve damage(with questionable results) and the"better" ones will add 15-20$ to the cost of a tank of fuel.Wouldn't take many fillups to pay for a valve job to run UL safely.

Most of the big premium cars of that period required premium gas, to avoid the knocking. That generation engine was a pain to work on. Kind of post 60's performance and before the electronic control systems got good. Make a good pimpmobile tho :))).
