I've just bought a gehl shid loader with a onan
23 hp engine (2cylinder).It sounds like it's pulling awful hard even at idle.I'd like to change the timing but can't find any distributor
or points to adjust.Where is this stuff located.
I have a Kohler engine on a mower that did the same thing.I adjusted the points while it was running with an allen wrench and it really helped.

Is the pump building pressure when nothing is being moved? Is the engine's carb set too rich or lean? Is she runningb on one cylinder. That happens more often than you would care to believe.

your points are in a small rectangle box w/cover,
on top of engine behind the carb drive side of engine. i dont think timing is adjustable, but you might look to see if it can.

Thanks,I found the points, adjusted them with an allen wrench while it was running, seemed to gain about 5 hp,runs easier to.The carb seems fine, runs on both cylinders, just been setting for years. It's a 1974 model with 903 hours.
