Need help with rotary mower - bad oil seal

I own an old 5 Ft. 3 pt. Rotary Mower that has a bad oil seal. I have no idea who manufactured this mower. Before I use it, I refill it with gear oil. From reading the boards hear I know that some people wouldn't even bother with the oil seal - filling up the gear box with heavy grease. I usually try to fix things properly when I can, however. I noticed that the leak got significantly worse this year and I finally got motivated enough to disassemble the unit to replace the oil seal. But when I tried to take the heavy metal mounting plate that the two blades swing from, I noticed that it was held in place with some kind of splined fastener, not a bolt. It looks like I need a special socket tool to remove the plate and get to the oil seal. Are all rotary mowers made like this? Any thoughts on where I can get the proper tool to remove the plate?

thanks,

BeefEater

I run grease in an old Servis Gyro84. Grease keeps metal particles in suspension and promotes wear, so I flush with dsl every year and add new.

Will a 12 point socket fit on the "splined" fastener??
Just checking

I realize that I wasn"t clear in my earlier post. The socket - if there is one, would need to be a "male" type socket - like a gear.

The socket that would fit it would be approximately 1.25 - 1.5 inches diameter and with a hole in the middle for the drive shaft to pass through. Imagine a very deep socket welded to a gear about 1.5 in. diameter.

I'm getting the impression that I'll need to fill the unit with grease, after all.

Might tyr a Snap-off or Mac tools guy. Take a photo of the monster and show it to some mechanics, they might just have one. I had a seal problem with mine also. I got the hog for $25 (about 5 years ago), so figured I had a lot of "wiggle room" on repairs. I've been adding the grease once a year and been doing fine ever since.
so far I'm up to $5 in cheap grease and a new knuckle for the driveshaft($14).
