Since they may be different than what is used in today's tractors can someone inform this novice as to specifically what grade or brand of fluid is recommended for each of the following resevoirs of a 1960 Ford 641 tractor?:

Differential capacity = 8 qts of what?

Tansmission Capacity = 8.5 qts of what?

Hydraulic Capacity = 8 qts of what?

Air fister oil cap Capacity = 1.3 pts of what?

Steering Box Capacity = 1 pt. of what?

Thanks.

This comes up all the time on the Ford forum. I recommend using 134 in all three compartments: transmission, hydraulic reservoit and differential. This will provide smoother shifting in cold weather. More importantly, if 134 from the transmission or differential leaks past the seals into the hydraulic reservoir, it won't affect the hydraulics like gear oil will.

Use whatever you use in the crankcase in your air cleaner as well.

I Use

Differential capacity = 8 qts of what?
90w gear oil

Tansmission Capacity = 8.5 qts of what?
90w gear oil

Hydraulic Capacity = 8 qts of what?
Ford 134 hyd oil or equivalent

Air fister oil cap Capacity = 1.3 pts of what?
Motor oil

Steering Box Capacity = 1 pt. of what?
90W gear oil

Some use 134 hyd oil in the top 3.

Hey John, just wondering, do you have access to Ford service bulitons (sp)? The reason I ask is my FNH dealer said to use 134 in my trans due to one. I know you don"t have really cold conditions and I think cold issues is why they might have said this. I have replaced my rear seal once on the engine, still leaks, but now since I have 134 in tne trans; I"m thinkin that the front seal on the imput shaft could be the culprit. Even though I replaced it and the thrust washer. I guess I could have it tested but I don"t have a clue as to where. Thanks as always Richard

Ps. Why do you all send your HOT Gulf air up here to Ind?. 100deg. today???? Keep it!

Funny you mention that. I always thought the northern tier of states were substantially cooler than the gulf coast due to the gulf. Seems I was wrong. You guys get hot too.

Mark

Yes Mark it does get hot up there to.
Only differance is they have fronts coming through year round.
It may be hot today then a front comes threw and drops the humidity and cools it off a touch.
You know our next front will be sometime in late Sept. or Oct.

Heard a lady on a talk show the other day complaining about the noise her neighbors new A/C was making right outside her window.
The southern boy in me thinks how can see hear it with her windows closed.
She then says she does not have A/C in her house. They just open windows and turn on a fan.

Thats where I need to move. Some place that you do not need A/C. Man that would be nice; at least till Sept.

The good thing is 100 deg. temps are usually near or are record temps. Watch out! The woman and I are looking to become G.D--- Yankees! Richard H

Ford service bulitons (sp)? NO

I think I remember someone talking about this on the Ford board a while back. Something about the bearings were built in such a way as to not allow the thick 90w in. I think that would be hogwash but then again I do not know what cold is. I feel under MY conditions 90w with a good additive to promote sticking of the oil rather than all draining to bottom is better.

The heat is one reason I use 90w and I can see using 134 where it is cold.

We have been hearing all you guys complaining about no rain so we thought we would send you some of our weather. The heat and humidity creates afternoon bubble up showers. At least it does here.
2:30 right now and it is
97° 50% humidity; makes it feel like 109°
30% chance of rain all week

Looks to be a good year for the winter grow out ranchers around here if you guys do not get some rain/hay soon.

OH by the way do you have a speedco or another place that changes oil in large trucks close by. They can test your oil for you.

If not most tractor/large truck mechanic shops can test oil or know where to get it done.
