i got to looking at our cub cadet tractor (36 horsepower 4 cyl. diesel) and have been kind of thinking about converting the exaust from down and out front corner, to up through the hood.

where the exaust pipe comes out of the muffler, it does a 90 degree turn straight down, and then goes down about a foot and a half then 45 degrees toward the front and out.

now, what i was thinking about doing is takin my air cut off tool, cutting jus before the 90, and sending it through the hood. keep in mind, this is just a project to putter with, not something that has to be done. what do ya'll think? sorry for long post. i have thought about clearance, but we never have folded the ROPS down in 5 years, so dont see why we will, any problems that i dont see?
thanx

I had a 3 cyl Allis diesel once; 18 hp. The muffler was held to the exh manifold with 4 bolts and was symmetrical. So rather than have it shoot horizontally out the front with the end of the pipe bent away from the tractor, I just rotated it 90 degrees and had a vertical mount. Much better. Didn't have to cut tin as it was outside the cowling.

I don't know why it wouldn't work, as long as you don't add lots of extra bends and increase back pressure. I've got a 574 utility, thought about doing this, but with low brush & branches, I finally decided it was better where it is.It's been there since '75 when I bought it new. Also, other tractors i've had and used with vertical muffler, when on the highway really "blowing the carbon out", it seems I get a lot of it in my eyes. Never had that happen on the 574.
