Mornin' All,

Someone posted this picture of an International powerplant.

My dad used to have one of these gizmos hitched to an irrigation well across the road from our house.

He had a straight pipe on it and every summer during my youth, I had to listen to that thing beller for 60 solid days and nights.

No wonder my brains are scrambled. :>(

'Round here, number of farmers used the 2cycle GM diesels - Those things sure could put out a whine!

The UD-24, a great engine. Back in the -50's our neighbour had one powering a sawmill. My brother and I, at the same time, had a sizeable gas unit for our sawmill. It was a Hercules twin-ignition with an eight inch bore x twelve inch stroke. Don't remember the model number. Very sluggish governor which was not so hot on the sawmill.

Hi Casey,

Back then irrigation wells were a relatively new thing in the county and the guys really didn't know how much power it was going to take to lift that much water to the surface.

I don't know how much power those old diesels had; probably something like 80 horse? But I mean to tell you, that thing would beller!

When he finally took it off and switched over to an electric belt driven, seems to me like a thirty-five horse motor did the same darned job. Then, I had to get used to that thing singin' all night. :>)

It's got to be a tinkersmashinal. It has too many throws to be a John Deere. Actually the whole thing is just for show and is run by the motor you see belted up in the lower left corner. Is that guy on the right leaning over the rail seasick? Or is he just another typical union employee waiting to do his job of installing the final inspection sticker? Howl!!

Yeah Sllen, I heard one growling one Summer where we used to live. After trying to ignore it for a month or so, I decided to find it. Rode out on a friends horse one evening, just following the sound. Finally tracked it down at just over 3 miles away! Durn thing sounded like it was in my hip pocket.
