OT Well water pumps

I need suggestions for a water pump for my well. Problem #1 is that I have no electricity so that pretty much eliminates jet pumps. Water rises to about 26 ft (borderline shallow well) so I've been using a cistern type hand pump but don't get much water for the effort it takes. Tried a gas powered centrifugal pump but it didn't have enough suction to pull from that depth. I thought of a windmill--can still buy them new but they are very expensive. My local pump guy said to get an electric submersible pump and either run it with a generator or solar-again pretty expensive. Ideas?

Thanks

Lehman (spelling?) Non Electric cataloge has hand operated well pumps with the pump below the water line.

Sorry
After rereading the post it comes to me that it is a well that you are pumping from. Hyd. ram can't work

I'm with Coloken on this. in reply to JackT, 07-21-2005 13:38:11
For cheap water when you want it you can't beat using a pump jack if you don't have a windmill.

If you are needing to fill a tank you can measure the fuel consumed to fill it, then add the same about of gasoline to a small engine agian the next time.

If water and waste is not a factor you could power a pump jack with a Savonius rotor that you have made from barrels. I expect that a shaft and bearings from a combine reel might be just the ticket for starters. Using large and small pulleys should get you the correct power for pumping.

A submersible pump takes far more amps upon starting than you might think. I had a 7,000 watt diesel generator that pulled pretty hard until water was flowing along nicely.

Link below for example only. Upsize as you figure your needs to be.

You really need to push water up; hard to suck it up. To move any kind of water takes hp. You ain't gonna get hp outta da solar rig; per se.

A $300 5kw gas generator from HD could power a 1/2 hp submersible pump. You could mount a tank on a tower and pump it into the tank. Then let gravity feed it out. Not a lot of pressure but it would work. Pressure from the elevated tank would be about .4 lb pressure per foot of height above where you are using the water.

Hi Jack,

Well you left out the most important info, how much water do you need, gpm, and your static water head?

For what little info given, a jet pump ran off of a generator pumped into a cisteren then pressure pumped to the house with a 12v RV pump using the generator to recharge the pressure pump battery's while deep well is pumpimg.

A generator can be run from a tractor PTO, or a PTO direct driven jet pump using a diesel engine for economy or a pump ran from a VW diesel engine using home made fuel.

Under ground water is expensive to use.

More info equals more suggestions.

Gas engine driven pump jack in stead of windmill. Lots of setups like that here in cow pastures. A jet pump can be used with a gas driven centrifical pump. Would Take some doing, like a tank to keep prime. Depends on what you use it for. Personaly, I'd buy a generator.
