Just looked at a '56 john deere 420. Owner said it had a two-stage clutch. Would somebody enlighten me what this is?

Clutch was made by Spicer. Also used in other brands of small tractors such as a Massey 135 ??? or something along that line. A Massey expert would know which of those under 50HP Masseys had two stage clutches in the 1950's & 1960's. A cheap source of parts for a Deere. The clutches set right up easy after doing a couple. When using the proper feeler gauges listed in the manual and service bulletions. Going by guess and by golly with just a ruler is looking for trouble. All three fingers have to be within a couple of thou. The set screws between the two pressure plates that activate the pto clutch have to equal as well. Being equal height on everything is even more important then travel distances. The clutch "springs" don't look like a spring either. Kind of an curved hoop in shape. Don't forget to grease it a little with a premium quality grease on occassion.

Are you saying that the 2 stage clutch that J.D. used is the same as the one that M.F. used. I have been into a couple Massey clutches. Not bad at all.

The 2 stage clutch available on the John deere Dubuque tractors like this were available so that you could have a live PTO. Depressing the pedal half way down disengaged the wheel clutch, then the last half of the travel disengaged the power shaft. This allowed you to stop the wheel travel, but still have the bush hog or whatever still operating. It is a good system as long as it is adjusted and maintained correctly. It is a very delicate replacement job though. You have to install and align 2 complete clutch systems and then reconnect the 2 halves of the tractor. NEVER, ever force the halves of the tractor back together, as you will ruin 2 very expensive clutch systems if you hurry.
