What us older ones on here might really know?? At times I see people telling me I'm out in left field when I try to help some one but its almost always people that haven't been here long. So is there any place where we might post what we have done over the years to learn what we know and why we know how to help others. I enjoy tring to help but sure hate it when some one tries to tell me all about what I know already and probably learned it years before they could walk. Theres a lot of guys on here that know there stuff. Like Dell and John T and J-S. But shouldn't there be a place to let others know how we learned what we did to get where we are and how we know what we know. Sorry sort of got upset when some one tried to tell me what I knew from what I did from working my A$$ off for uncle sam. Thanks

One sure thing, a thin skin and an open forum are not good partners.

Some people will not listen, they are too stuck on themselves... Just last week, a new customer dumped a project on us, some junky tooling from China. 3 of us, with a combined 100 years of experience, tried to explain what repairs were needed to a young engineer from France. He was quite rude & told us we did not know what we were doing...After he left, we decided that the job was not worth the hassle... If he is so smart, let him figure it out.....

old, Almost everyone answering in on this thread has posted help information that has helped me learn a lot or covered things I have done. Sometimes their way was better and sometimes not but you knew that their way would work too if you had to use it because of some unknown problem. I have learned one heck of a lot from so many of those willing to take the time to share their knowledge. Thanks to them all but it would be nice to know where all of this knowledge generated from. I bet it is as wide and diverse as recipes for potato salad. You know, I haven`t ever tasted any that I didn`t like.

I've been following this thread since it's inception. I have started to post my $.02 worth a couple times, then changed my mind. Now I'm gonna give it a go....

Young or old, there's a certain element that just CAN'T learn from someone elses mistakes. Young or old, there's a good many folks that can't accept the fact that someone else might be able to do just as good, if not BETTER, all the while, doing it different than they....

Those people are at a dis-advantage in life. No matter how far they've made it, they won't do as well as they COULD have.

Over my years, I've learned that there are some things I just can't change. There's a lot of things that don't need MY changing them.

Sometimes I just remain quiet, leaving my opinions to myself. (Shut up and listen, as my dad would tell me) Other times, I give my thoughts, then when someone disagrees with what I KNOW worked well for me, I just say "OK, You're right sir". No need in argueing....

Bottom line, I'm only responsible for my own actions. I TRY to be helpfull when asked, but realize I can't force my beliefs on someone else.

And when they slap me down for trying to be helpful, I can only wait with baited breath until they're back on here a few days later to tell the tail of their great "learning experience".

$.02 worth, from an old dumb dirtfarmer.....

It is obvious to me, from some of the answers to questions I see on the forum, that I have a "ways to go" before I claim to have much knowledge at all on the machines that are discussed. I just try to offer some good advice if I've successfully (by some miracle) fixed a problem on a tractor or implement. I usually can tell who knows what they're talking about... We could all probably be more carefull of what we post - we can be easily offended by what someone may write, simply because it's just text - we can't see the expressions on their faces or in their voices. However - to verbally assault someone because of a difference of opinion is just plain rude. If you're just kidding someone - say so - don't leave it up to them to decipher what you've posted as poking fun. They may take it just the opposite way!!

I don't think posting a resume would be the answer- I don't claim to have encyclopedic knowledge from a lifetime as a mechanic, like some on here do, but sometimes I have knowledge of a particular problem on a particular machine because I've "been there, done that"- so then I post, to try to help. But Lord help anyone if I ever try to give advice on closed center hydraulic systems, for instance (how do those things work, anyhow)?

Personally, I always listen to what you say. I have even referred a person to you regarding a hay issue and you responded. Don't let the few overpower the many.

I don't think we need to post our resumes on here to get a little respect....just don't assume you will always get it.

Hi Old,

I know where you're coming from. Been there, done that, not necessairly on these fourms. Just life in general. People ask questions or seek advice. I give my honest opinion. Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm wrong. Often times, I know I'm right, and they do what they were going to do anyway, and then come back 2 days later and ask "why didn't this work?". "Did you do what I said?" ...."No." So, I don't see why they need to complain to me. In the end, I say what I think, and a person can make up their own mind. It's no difference to me. Not worth getting mad about. Have a good one!

Hey Old,
I know the feeling.
Working in the repair business, I get people who stop in or call asking questions all the time. Alot of the time you feel like what your saying falls on deaf ears. Seems some folks want to ask a question, just to here you respond the way they think you should, if you don't then you must be wrong. I haven't posted alot on here, but check in from time to time. The one thing I have noticed is peoples willingness to try and help others. I think that's great, so keep posting, because even if someone snubs you alittle there may be ten others that your reply helped out.

Old, it does get to be frustrating doesn't it? Sometimes the information I share has come directly from an original repair manual and I still get shot down. I don't worry about it any more. If the person who asked the question doesn't want to follow my advice, well, it's not my tractor he is working on.

Just like Old and some of you others, I know everything there is to know, let alone everything I need to know. I also hate it like I hate a rounded off screwdriver when someone proves me wrong on some tiny little pi$$ ant issue. If you ever see me tell someone something wrong on here, just mind your own damn business and leave it alone. I am the king and I have spoken.

I don't think credentials are necessary. After lurking here for a while, one developes a sense of posters who know their stuff and areas of expertise. Even if there were self proclaimed credentials, some would over state and some would understate.

Sorry Old, hope it wasn't me. And if it was, I apologize sincerely, honest. As for where to post experiences persay, I do not know. A couple of years ago, I met an oldtimer, about 82 that was selling his tractors, a VAC and a D14. Both were nice, but I wasn't looking for them. The thing is, I spent about a half hour looking them over, and having him explain the modifications like home made power steering that worked very well, and another couple of hours listening to him tell me about resleeving Olivers in the field to finish the plowing, which had to get done. Things like that. It was my pleasure. My pleasure. Turns out that his wife had passed away not so long before that, and as we talked, mostly he talked, he explained that he had a "bad ticker", and told me he didn't expect to be around so much longer. I didn't want to hear that, but he knew himself far better than I did, and I was in no place to argue with him. I suppose his biggest battle was the loss of his partner, and that's a battle that can be impossible at any age. The nicest thing about our talk, was the smile on his face as he remineced to me, and went on...for a couple of hours, until it began getting dark and he had to go in. For as long as he talked, I was willing to listen. I didn't just oblige him, I truely enjoyed it, and picked up a thing or two. Never too old to learn, or be put in my place.

You talk, my pleasure, sincerely.

Mark

I used to go visit an old lady who lived on her family farm. i knew her grandson, is how i found her! She must have been in her 90's, and lived alone! We'd sit on the front porch and talk and swat flies, and drink cool drinks! Best time of my life! I was about 25 yrs old at the time. She told me things about her area that i stored in my memory banks. The county had taken a big part of the farm for a county park and golf course! She didn't have much good to say about the newly rich that were traipsing around on what was her family's farm, but, she couldn't do much about it by then. Near as i can remember, she got around $20 an acre for her land! The big-hearted county commisioners saw to that! And now, i am approaching 81 yrs.! I have a small business fixing mowers for friends, and others. My mind is keen, i'm in good health, and i've learned a lot of things from this forum, and Lawn & Garden Web! Been stumping around for 60 yrs or so on a wood foot! A gift from Uncle Sam (WW II) I have never let it get me down, unless it broke or something, and I did everything i wanted to do! So, ya have to take what life gives ya, and just keep on keeping on, until the end! My wife says she's going to put my $1000 banjo in my coffin when i kick off! I told her to sell it, and put the old cheap one in there instead! (Worth $100!) I've learned a lot from you folks, and i intend to stay on here as long as i can! Rustyj

Hey Old, I'm not that old myself, 37 to be exact, but I've been doing mechanic work all my life. Like you I hate it when 'younger' smart a--, without a clue, tells me what I know and don't know about my own job. The one thing I did learn long ago, and I know for sure about being a mechanic is the fact that I DON'T know it all and never will. I learn something new just about every day and no matter how small or insignificant that thing may sem at the time one of these days it will come in handy. Dad's been doing this kind of work about 20 years longer than I have and he and I still learn from each other all the time. The one thing I've seen, with us anyway, is that we each tend to look at problems/projects in different ways and as a result tackle them differently. Sometimes this leads to something that should be simple becoming more drawn out than it would if done another way and that's where the learning comes in. Many times one of us will come in when the other was doing something "the hard way" or trouble shooting something and having problems and said "why not try this, it'd be so much easier this way" or look, there is the problem right there staring you in the face. Like one of the previous posts said it's often something that "Hellen Keller" could have seen, but then again she was blind and "looked" at stuff different than any of us would have. It never hurts to have more than one pair of eyes, and more than one opinion. Everybody looks at things different and there is usually more than one way to solve a problem, even if it isn't "our way". The main thing is when the opinions are given it must be done in a respectful manner and not as a smart a-- comment. I'm willing to try anything once if somebody has a better idea, no matter wether their older or younder than me, and I've learned alot this way that I plan to pass on. I just hope when it comes time for me to pass it on I can find somebody that will actually listen and not think they know it all better than I do...even if they really do..... Just my .02

I can empathize big time. I have gained a thousand times the education from the years in my career than from my formal schooling.I also have credtials and certifications that require much continuing education. I work with the public daily trying to help people do what is right and profitable with their property and crops. I can still learn from those that have someting to offer. But it slaps one in the face when you give your best from your heart and then am told that so&so (a novice) said do this and that. Makes you want to say "what did you ask me for?" But you can't do that. You just let them decide and provide the goods and services they request. Thanks for the opportunity to vent.

I"m not pointing fingers at anyone but there is something I"d like to add. I think there is a lot of time spent just squabbling over nothing. I also think a lot of people (young and old)who reply to requests for help could use a little more tact. I don"t ask for help often but when I do I wouldn"t appreciate being made to feel dumb for not recognizing the problem, nor do I appreciate offering my suggestion to a problem just to be told that "Helen Keller could see that"s not the problem". Kidding around is one thing, but when I have a problem I want some useful advice and not sarcasm. Remember, the only dumb question is the one you didn"t ask. Oh, and by the way, thanks for everyones wisdom. It has been helpful so please stay here and share it!

Right on: I served my tool making apprenticeship under my grandfather. I learned more from him than I have ever been able to gleam out of books. Lots of times I have wished that I could have been blessed with all his knowedge and thanked god I got as much as I was able to. I always hired experience over book learning in my bussness.

old;

When I answer a question or make a comment it is based on experience. Hopefully, that will help someone with their problems.

Apprenticeship. Dont know about that anymore.
Alot of the apprenticeces we hired already knew everything you needed to know about the trade.
All you had to do was ask them.

The key is continuing education. Books, seminars and otj training. I am retired now and have been out of farming for 3 years and have not worked in my trade for 5 years.
