Hi there,

I need to install a new oil pump on one of my old farm vehicles. It is a 1981 Chevy K10 with a 250 6-cylinder engine.

The trouble is that the pan has RTV sealant around it and hence it won't come loose. I tried using a putty knife but there isn't much working clearance. I really don't want to pull the engine if I don't have to. So...do any of you have a suggestion of how I can "loosen" the RTV?

Thanks...

Mike

Some heavy whacks with a big rubber mallet on the side of the sump usually does good too. Make sure you hit it at the bend on the bottom. Up on the side and it'll crush it. It may bend it there too but you can straighten it without worrying about the sealing flange getting distorted up above.

My dad removed one on a older 216 six with starting fluid. didn't even have to remove the bolts. for a bonus he also had the valve cover come off. On a cold winter day, if a little is good a lot is better

just make SURE are the pan bolts are removed. sometimes on older engines there can be pan bolts that are accessed from the dust cover area or from the front timing cover area. check all around before prying if it seems to be stuck tight. sealant alone should let go fairly easily.

try using a thin screw driver and tap in in all around to break seal rtv black is touch but it will come maybe a propane torch would soften it up to help pry loose.
