I have come to own an old frost and wood horse drawen hay mower. I was wondering what the correct colours for the mower are as I would like to paint it authenticly and display it. Any help is appreciated.

According to the summer issue of the Cockshutt Quarterly 2005, an article by Mel Phelps on Frost & Wood says that a working original is still in use at the Upper Canada Village in Morrisburg Ontario. Moreover the article has some colour photos showing a pale green colour used with an orangey-red on the wooden frame mower.
Hope this helps.

Could you take a nut off in different places? Often there is paint under these or on the threads. Won't help as to ornament or stripes though but you get to know the original colors and not what someone painted.

I have my Dad"s old F+W mower but all its color is gone too. I thought somehow that F+W had to do with Cockshutt.Dan in AB

DCM: Frost and Wood did indeed become part of the Cockshutt Co. in a buy out. It was bought by Cockshutt to broaden their product line. The final products with Frost and Wood decals were painted in Cockshutt orange and yellow. I think Frost and Wood may have use other colors before buy out. I have a seeder, no name, that I belive to be Frost and Wood, has traces of a pale green on it.

Here is one item I do know which may give you a time frame. My dad bought a new manure spreader around 1940, it had Frost and Wood decals and painted Cockshutt orange and yellow. A neighbor had the same spreader about 5 years newer, same colors only with Cockshutt decals.

I am also curious about this as well. Always wondered what color schemes Frost and Wood may have used.

Hi Hugh,it makes sense,I also have Dad"s 2nd mower which in fact is a Cockshutt and it wears CS colors, the paint scheme would have change to match the mother corp.I painted a CS walking plow a yr. ago, guessing of course I made the frame forest green, the steel handles light yellow and the guide wheel and stem red. I will watch this post to what comes up.Dan in AB

I have one and parts for another, but I can't tell you what the colors should be. Try the Oliver forum.

Thanks for the info guys. I don't know the year of the mower but the name frost and wood is cast into the tool box lid. It had sat in a field for 50 years and needed only an oak pitman arm to work. I was quite suprised to get it to move with a little oil and grease after all those years. I will try to post a pick in the next few days to see if that will help.
