Obviously I'm a Texas boy, tried and true. Thought I was a blue boy cause I liked blue utility tractors.....old iron of course, not new stuff. Had some blue sitting around the place.

Had some green too. Green happened to be the bigger stuff as there is no big blue in N. Tx.

Next thing you know I'm retiring and buying things to play with and implements are green. So I buy a lotta green and expand my green tractor lot.

So I needed a disc harrow. Found this 11' at the local sale barn for a reasonable price (Just right for me but probably too small for the red guy.....what's his name.....Allan NE.....LOL).

Anyhew, I realized it needed some parts; axle bearings, seals and snap rings.

Now this is a 1961 JD AW model disc harrow (not a tractor) and I call the local Ag Power, Inc. dealer in N. Dallas....this is the guy who sells $200-$300k rigs to the gaucho's in South America and ships the stuff down there...I mean I'm talking about a $30 bearing and $2 seal, not on a tractor but a 44 year old disc harrow.

Thanks to "Steve Ia" this board, I figured out what I wanted.....

So I called the parts guy and he has "IN STOCK" on 2 sets of the 4 sets of parts I need and the other 2 sets showed up the next day...yesterday.

I finished it today. Runs like a nu-un.

Now the blue house would have told me, and has, on tractor parts, not implement parts on a 44 year old implement, that NH no longer supports that part number.

So the saga goes on. I have this JD 4010 which is a '61 model. The seat was a wobblin. Go to my green dealer and ordered seat brackets and bushings and will be here Monday.....on a 44 year old tractor; I said seat bushings and brackets, not piston rings and engine bearings!!!!

This is why GREEN is King.

Everything else just falls in line....(duckin the flak) but truth is truth.

Have a nice day, Grin

Mark

Mark, where are you located? I am in McKinney. We have an Ag Power dealer here. I have been able to get most things for my 630 there. They will tell me if it is original or not and if its not in stock I get it 1-3 days later depending on what it is. CLW

Yes I do. Drive out there most of the time to look at the tractors. Is Jerry still there? Haven't had to buy parts for a few years. Frog did my transmission work a few months before he passed away. He was good on 2- cylinders.

Don't know Jerry. Mostly I just buy parts. One of these days I may have some old iron in their shop but for now not necessary..... goodie!

Do have a responsive dealership; should I say dealerships since they have 5 in the general area.

Good Sunday morning Mark. I guess I know what you mean. Some dealers would prefer to sell new equipment, as opposed to fixing old. My dealer, doesn't mind fixing the old stuff. Gotta admit though, the sales guy did point out the window at new tractors, but the service guys were more than happy to help me. I got my old timer back yesterday, and now its settin in the barn waiting for me to slide the door open so it can stare me eyeball to eyeball. The boss is back.

It sure felt good to drive it a few miles home from the Deere guy's place, and I have a tight transmission again. I didn't mind the cars and pickups blowin by me, or being chased down, caught, and passed by a sprayer like I was sittin still. Them sprayers have quite a road gear, and they take up the whole road, so gotta move over for them.

The sales guy was wrong. An '05 4520 and a '70 4520 have very little in common, at best. He can keep his '05.

Guess I'm lucky cause the parts guys will talk to you for 30 minutes about finding a $0.98 nut to fix your 44 year old seat while the guy next to him is writing up a $3000 widget for a nearly new one. Their pay is the same. They are there to help and they do.

I needed a fuel cap for my Case SC, so went in to the dealer and asked for one. They said it was not available. I went to the next closest dealer when I got a chance (60 miles away) and asked for the same cap. They said they had bad news. They didn't have it in stock, and you could tell they were very sorry. I just wish they were closer than 60 miles away.

Yep,JD has the best parts network by far ! Just stop and think all the different models they must keep stuff for some going back 70+ years. I just got done working on a 1950 B model, dealer even had some stuff in stock ! Rest showed up next day or two at most ! Was able to get everything I needed. Sure some stuff seems high some stuff I even think ,How do they sell it so cheap ! It all evens out and I'm happy to walk out the door with it.Beats the heck out of getting something custom made. I don't think there is any company that ever made anything that still services parts like Deere does. Most automotive stuff is obsolete in 7 years.

Most of the parts I have needed to buy was because of someone elses abuse and lack of maintenance and repair. These parts were around at a much lower price years, and years ago I wish someone would of bought some instead of patching up and/or running without ! Alot of talk about restorations being done ,but not much talk about care and preservation so you don't need to do so much restoration.

Agree about abuse. Course there is a flip side. If the owner abused the thing and sold it cause it no longer worked, it was available for you to buy.

Had he taken care of it, and it not break, he may have kept it.

I dunno...

No such charge at my dealership.

But my parts guys get it right and when I make a mistake (like the hub cap) I eat it (personal pride....not his fault I goofed)....like it will fit something else around the place.

You got it right, Mark! Green is King. I love my local JD dealer and he has a great financing plan to boot. Why the last time I went in to buy new studs and nuts for my wheel I had to finance them, reasonable interest rate and they are carrying the note for 3 years.

Agco still supports allis well in our area. Ford also supports its tractors well too. JD must be so repuatable for having good parts support from the dealer because everyone that owns a JD is always in need of parts (or that expensive green paint???) :D. I think Allen will get a kick out of this comment. I am just yanking your chain on that. I think that all companies made a good tractor and all had some lemons on the way. Some companies had better people upstairs and others didn't. Ohh, one more joke about JD, why are they all painted green? Because that way they can hide in the woods when the real tractors come to get the work done :D. Must be why the paint is so expensive, cost JD so much money to find the paint that blended in with the woods the best of any green :DDD. Sorry, had to spread the jokes, hope you all take it as that. I am an allis/ford/farmall man, in that order. If you have any jokes, let them fly (don't care about the brand, no need to start a color war just bc of a few jokes is there?)

Hi Hurst, Not all AGCO dealers see it like you do. I called one for some parts info on an AC and the part guy said "we're AGco not AC". He didn't even want to talk about AC. I had always thought that AGCo would support the AC line too as they own the rights and all, but not all their dealers do, aparently.

Well I had a plow that was soon to be inop. Thanks to these guys it is now going to run me for a lotta years. The parts were very reasonable. Some were domestic and some overseas. When my NH dealer tells me that they don't support parts any more I'm outta luck.

Yup - those greenies work fine, but you have to PAY to fix 'em! I have a friend that is Parts manager at two CaseIH dealers in Nebraska (same people own both). He has Green guys come in to buy parts from him. He showed me a small bearing a couple years ago that JD wanted $37 for - he sells the same EXACT bearing (painted Red) for $8.50. My brother has a 2020 JD - he spent $130 on a muffler - 2 days later he found the same one at a local parts house for $34. The cost of parts (and what you have to lay out for the tractor) is what keeps me from buying a greenie, other than I'd have to paint it red, just to make it look right!

So I had misplaced mine on a 4010. Thought I had lost it but was misplaced.

Go to the green counter and ask for a fuel cap.

Guy puts a red cap on the counter.

I said I'm not putting that thing on my green tractor.

He said "Mother Deere has been doing it for 40 years".

Went home and looked at the cover of my I&T manual; nice glossy color cover and sure nuf, there sat a red cap on a 3010D. Oh well.

Man, where do you shop. Paint is about $5 for a rattle can and the cap was less than $10.

But I realize why they painted it red....like in fire....like in fuel....not green like in cooling.

Seems that people normally think that the radiator is in front and they want to put water and antifreeze in the fuel tank. Makes sense.

Mark,

I agree JD is good; very good.

But, CaseIH is every bit as good and do not charge you extra for the paint like your beloved Johns do. :>)

Don't get me wrong, I like John Deere stuff; think it is awesome, in fact. It is just that damned attitude. You get raped with every sale to the tune of about 35%.

Otherwise, I'd own some green too. :>)

Just my view, tho

Gotta tell you this one. When I was picking up my parts, I needed a hub cap (grease) for the thing also. I had been to TSC and had theirs in my hand; one too large one too small.

I told the parts guy what I wanted. He looked it up, went to a drawer and got one out (anothr part in stock). I measured it and said that someone must have switched hubs as this is too small.

Do you have a drawer full of them? He said yes. I said lemme see. While I was diggin around in there he said "you know, we have part numbers we look up. We don't have to guess." I LOL'd on that. Thought it was cute.....and true.

Anyhew, I grabbed what I thought to be the right one and it wasn't. So the next time I'm in town, I'll get the one the parts catalog says I should have.

The other guy has been there 30 years and is one cabinet full of info. He seems to know part numbers for everything. He guessed 2 part numbers for my 44 year old plow and one of them was the correct one.

Both guys very courteous and don't laugh at silly (to you) questions.
