Howdy folks,

Been a while since I've been in. Talkin to a fella at the store the other day, he mentioned using bondo to seal up those plates I made for the water leak on my JD R. Dad said "Naw, it won't work". The guy though, is one who I trust. He owned an R and has worked on a heck of a lot more tractors than me and dad put together so I am knockin that idea around. What d'ya think? Would it hold? Dad thought the heating up and cooling down of the block would get it broke loose. As I recall, that block doesn't get hot at all when it isn't running out of water so I have my doubts about it coming loose. I have plenty of bondo "in stock" at home lol. Other than that all I can do is have my neighbor look it over and see if he can braze or weld the patches I made so they'll be permanently on there. Have a good 'un. God bless.

p.s. Never did send in anything to the weather job in S.D. :)

I still say while you got it apart get a good used block and fix it right and then you will have something that will hold up without worry.Anything else is just a patch that the next guy is going to get stuck with having to fix.

Ordinary Bondo is polyester based. JB Weld is epoxy, as is the Devcon product. Epoxy has about 5 times the bond strength of polyester. Bondo does make an epoxy based filler, but it is very hard to find. About 8 times as expensive as the polyester based.

I have seen wet sleeves in a diesel sealed to the block using Bondo. The sleeves normally use O-rings to seal but the surface was to badly eroded for the O-rings to seal so Bondo was used. It worked great and didn't leak a drop.

I have repaired some cracked dies so they would not leak, using Devcon epoxy. Then. I would pour some Low-Viscosity Loctite in the water channels, & apply air pressure. The air forces the Loctite into any small cracks, where it hardens. Some of the repairs have lasted for years, running water from 150 to 210 degrees. I think the Loctite grade is 290, also refered to as Wick & Lock.

If I were sealing a water leak in a block, I would use JB Weld. Make sure the surfaces is very, very clean and dry -- I can't stress that enought.

I once jb welded a spark plug in a honda trail 70 because the kids stripped the threads. I didnt have time to change the head at that moment so i cleaned it up real good and used a cleaner and jb'd it in and around it thinking that the kids could ride for a day or so anyway.I had a head sitting on the bench. But i wanted to see how long it would last first. I figured the hot cold cycles would break the weld. It never did come out and i never did change the head. Just my .02

I use both bondo (Body Repair) and JB Weld but I like PC-7 better.
