Yesterday the transmission in my MF to35 got stuck in reverse. The gear shift wouldn't budge. I remember reading here that this is a common problem, but couldn't remember the solution. With a bad cell phone connection, I spoke with my mechanic, but got nowhere. After about an hour I fixed it mostly by accident. The procedure is perfectly described in Big Deans site: Link but I thought a picture might help. This is a pic taken thru the fill hole on the top of the transmission. In essence, you need to pry the large gear on the left(toward front of tractor) either forward or back to get it in the middle of its range. This will get it all back in line and the shifter will work again. I hope this helps save someone an hour or two. Also, why is the inside of my tranny casing red? Is this normal?

Aren't all tractors SUPPOSED to be red? 8^)

The inside of the case is painted to prevent rust from mixing with the oil. The rust comes from condensation inside the gear case. After a while you get rusty oil. The rust wears out bearings and gear faces.

Also the paint inside the transmission case will trap any left over casting sand imbedded in the surface of the cast iron. This way it never gets loose to wear gears and bearings.

That paint also seals up the pores of the castings to help keep them for seaping out fluid.

The red also supplies much better contrast, resulting in superior digital pictures.
