I am replacing the muffler on my AC-B. The old muffler was clearly worthless. It was rattling in the manifold. The old muffler was shaped like a lunch box and fit under the "hood". The new muffler is about 3 feet long and the muffler portion will stick outside the hood. I suspect that this is correct. The shaft that fits into the manifold is slightly large and I cannot push it into the maifold hole by hand. Should I drive it with a block of wood and a hammer? It looks like this is what was done to the old muffler. Is the pin in the manifold a regular bolt? It is very rusted and I cannot tell if the end is a nut or a special piece. If it is a bold should it be tightened when the muffler is in place? Once the muffler is in place, is it easy to remove it. The way the new muffler is configured the hole in the "hood" is too small to clear the muffler. I have bought the owners and service manuals, but they do not mention the muffler. As an aside what is the piece that I call the "hood".

If it is not obvious to the reader, I am a novice with tractors. Thanks in advance for any help

As Jeff said, are two different styles. Underhood, or through hood. As far as smacking it with a 2x4, I think take another look. Might have some of the original or old stack pipe stuck inside the manifold. Is a 1/2" or 9/16" bolt, half moon washer, and nut that clamps the stack into the manifold. Make sure is no old pipe left, loosen the nut and bolt, drop the new into the stack, and tighten the bolt. Because of the shape of the washer clamping the pipe into the manifold, it will hold the nut, keeping it from spinning as you tighten the bolt.

Thanks Mark. Your comments lead me to believe that I have the wrong muffler. I will look for residue from an old muffler. However the old one I removed came out intact. It was very loose and rattling.

I'm thinking that the pipe diameter should be 1.5" OD. Sounds like you got a stack, not an under the hood. Will be snug, not tight. Should also have a cut into the pipe that goes into the manifold for the bolt to slide up into, so can clamp it with the bolt and washer. May have to file that cutout so bolt will slide up into it.

By the way, stacks are nice, but if you're gonna be around brush or tree limbs, you'll find yourself re-mounting and tightening every day. Spmetimes under hoods are more effective.

Thanks Jeff. My tractor has been abused. I want to use it to pull firewood. I am not concerned with looks at the present time. My main concern is do I have the right muffler. The pipe that goes into the manifold is slightly larger. I do not want to force it if I have the wrong muffler.

could you be referring to the heat shield that is to keep hood from scorching ? it covers the manifold .

No I am referring to the large sheet metal top that connect to the fuel tank at one end and the raditor housing at the other and it has holes for the exhaust, oil fill, etc.
