You know I hate cats. But now just the other day I find this half-starved stray kitten hanging around the shop. He is quickly making himself right to home and somehow thinks I should be his mother. Shoot, I even had to stop at the store and buy milk.

He's a cute little guy.

I keep a cat in my shop...wouldn't be as fun without it.

We started out with 3 free kittens about 3 years ago. We now have over 20 cats on the farm. Good thing is that we don't even worry about feeding them. Don't know what they find, but they all stay well fed. We have to feed to kittens until they start hunting, but that is only for a month or two. Whats bad is I've watched these cats pack hunt squirrels and ground hogs. Squirrels don't stand a chance and the squirrel population has to have been cut at least in half (which is a good thing). If the dog get a ground hogs it just shakes it around and snaps it's neck. These cats rip the thing apart. Very few snakes around the barn anymore. We don't get too bad with cats though because the males take off every year and we are on a busy road which claims it's fair share. Any one in the Allentown Pa area in need of a few barn kittens, I have plenty.

Vince,

You saying that cats run the snakes off? Hope so as we are having an outcropping of Copperheads in our general area and I sure don't need any around here.

Problem with wild cats is they kill off the rare and semi rare song birds.

That's true and that's the part I don't like. See empty nests on the ground all the time.

Might as well hang on to that cat, they are great for pest control. Only thing is, you might want to get it (he...she) fixed before long or you will end up with more than you need.....like I have. We have 7 now, and she is expecting again.
Funny thing is I always hated Siamese cats, but this one for some reason pulled at my heart strings. The good thing about her, she leaves the chickens alone and now I don't have any more rats or mice in the barn. Needless to say, we named her Mouser, and she's been around here for almost 2 years now.

We too have a Siamese cross neutered male. Never had cats till about 3 years ago. Now have 3 inside and a 4th.....well any day now.

The Siamese likes to pee on my wife while in bed and on the bed. Haven't figured that out yet. Never does it anywhere else but in the litter box and in her bed and on her (sometimes).

Heard they pee to express themselves. Maybe he thinks my wife is his. Har Har.

Now that is interesting, a cat that pee's on the wife. Is it for sale??? Just kidding. Mouser had one litter of kittens that totaled 7. Withing a few weeks 6 of them had died with just one survivor who happens to be a male. He is absolutely the spitt'n image of her too, like a clone. We have wondered if a family member was the daddy which may have caused the deaths of the others. Anyway, long story short I named him Precious (thinking he was a she). I decided he would live inside, found out that was a mistake. He would use the litter box most of the time, but then discovered the wifes plants. Took them down on several occasions, dirt everywhere on the floor and then he would do his thing in it. The wife put up with it, but then he wet the bed one night and that was it, out he went. Yep, he's still here....always the first one in line at meal time. Go figure.
Funny thing is I hated cats when I was younger, only dogs were good enough for me. I guess times change, we have 1 inside dog and 3 outside. Cats, we have 1 inside and 6 outside. Guess who gets fed first in the morning..... .yep, the cats...then the chickens.....then the dogs...then me. Oh yea, the peacock gets fed at the same time as the cats. Keep thinking he will move on, but he's been here 9 years now....I guess he's here to stay. Makes a pretty good guard dog..... makes lots of noise when someone is coming in the yard.
Oh and if you wonder how the cats and peacock get along, the cat's tolerate the peacock, and the peacock let's them know who's boss. He trees a cat now and then just for fun. And the peacocks favorite food? Dry cat food, go figure.

I'm printing this for my wife to read. Maybe she will agree to move some of the critters outside.....course in the winter they would all be back inside and I'll bet the stray will be in here too.

Have read that siamese pee on things when they have an emotional reaction to something or feel challenged....the author said in closing "you have been warned". She spoke the truth. Grin

Enjoyed you sharing your experiences.

Happens to the best of us. If nothing else, you've got pest control for the shop now. Hmmm, Mother Cowman, kind of has a nice ring to it, tee hee!
