This info is 6 yrs old, don't know if it is still good...might try Art Edward (Edwards?) in Port William - in Clinton Co. Phone is still listed online as 937-486-2333. I spoke with him back then about some standing seam roofs he'd done that we'd looked at (he did "true" old-fashioned SSR's, not the clip-together SSR panels made by some companies). Also spoke with some folks who were pleased with his work. He obviously knew his biz when I talked with him a bit. Some other considerations led us away from getting a metal roof, not anything he said or did. I don't know if he's still roofing, however.
Hope this helps.

Where are you at in central Ohio? I know of a few in the area, 2 up at Mt.Vernon, and one down at Lancaster. Or, you can call Goodhew Metals, in Ridgeville Indinana, ask for Fellar, and he can tell you who all they are.

Try Montoya in Mt.Vernon, or Balcom Brothers in Mt. Vernon also.

Hi Delbert,

A standing seam has two parts, male and female. Generaly made in two sizes, 1" and 1-1/2". Some older SS were 2" on roofing.

The male lip is 7/8" broke at 90º on the flat sheet. Then a female upside down U clip slips over the male 90º and the clip tail is nailed/screwed to the joist.

The female SS is a 1" upside U bent to 90º that slips over the male 90º and the holding clip completing the SS.

Then a button punch is run along the SS to install a dimple so the seam can not come apart easy. Every other button is on the opposite side, typically about 12" apart. The dimple is a sandwich of three thickness of metal, two of the female U and one of the male.

As you can see, water would have to climb the 7/8" 90º in order to leak to the inside of the building plus the standing seam adds great strength to the joint. Adding the SS to a ribbed sheeting thus makes for a very strong roof that will not blow off in the wind.

On a copper roof, the SS adds character to the roof line.

The only problem with metal roofs is they must be installed in the winter for cold climates, allowing for metal shrinkage, and during the summer heat for hot climates, allowing for metal expansion.

The above is a example of a simple standing seam. Over the years there's been various modifications to the simple standing seam design. One not really more effective than the other other than increasing strength with longer seam legs or clips that are machine made, both with the end goal of faster installation.

T-Bone Thanks for the explamation. You did a good job of explaining it so I can understand it. Are these a regional thing? I don"t recall ever seeing one in South East Nebraska. Most of the barn roofs here were shingled, or corrogated galavanized tin.

Delbert,

Here is a picture. This is real high quality stuff for a house. Usually barn stuff is much thinner so it is more wavy. And also these pieces were custom made so they have no horizontal joints.

Sorry for the large pic. Just some picture from the web.

All our buildings have it on our place in MD. Very popular around MD, PA, Ohio.

Hi Joe,

What a beautiful looking roofing job. Man does that ever make that entire house design a smooth flow.

Did you install the roof yourself?

T-Bone

That is just a picture I found at www.metalroofing.com

We have an old metal roof on our house and need a new roof.

It's cheaper to have plywood installed and 30 year asphalt then to have one of these fancy metal roofs put on. We currently have no plywood as it is an old house.

Hi Don,

Call a sheetmetal company as that's really Sheetmetal work. Most roofing contractors hire SM workers as roofers don't like doing that type of work.

I agree with T-bone. It's sheet metal work. I fabricate/install standing seam roofs quite often. Problem is , I'm not near Ohio.

In this area, companies specializing in sheet metal fabrication still have the equipment and knowledge to do standing seam roofing - look for them in the yellow pages. Many roofing companies do shingles and rubber roofing; not standing seam, slate or shakes.

Also, see if any of your neighbors has used Amish carpenters. They can usually repair anything on a barn.

It takes special tools that no one has anymore. Have you tryed calling any local hardware stores that have been in business forever? If you could find the tools you could do it yourself.
