Looking at purchasing either an AC D14 or Oliver 550 both early 60"s utility style tractors for lighter duty maintenance work around my 40 acre property. Both units are priced similar and are in equally "good" condition. Any comments on one versus the other as far as overall quality, "tractor for the money", maintenance issues, parts acvailability, etc.?

Thanks for your help!

I've owned both, and I'd go with the Oliver, especially if its a diesel. More horses, independent PTO, handier size (same physical size as 8N Ford), better 3 point. About the best utility tractor of the older genre, IMHO.

I really appreciate your input, Dan. The Oliver is a gas engine but I gather you would still lean toward the Oliver versus the AC.

Any problem in obtaining parts for the Oliver tractor from your point of view?

I haven't had to buy a part in many years, other than consumables (filters, etc.), all of which are available (and usually in stock) at NAPA. Oliver is now AGCO, and I understand they are getting back into "Heritage" (old tractor) parts. You don't need to be near an AGCO dealer, as much is done by phone and mail these days (you will need a parts book, which I recommend for any tractor you buy- also helps in repairing, to understand how things go together). There are several outfits that specialize in Oliver parts- O'Brien Implement, Korves Oliver, etc.- a post on the Oliver board will get a quick response with phone numbers. Actually, parts availability should be about the same for the Oliver or the AC, since they are both a part of AGCO now, and each has their "specialist" dealers and suppliers.

My Buddy is getting a pretty good collection of Allis tractors, D-12 Industrial, D-14, about five D-17's, all except one are diesels, a 210, and a 5020 compact diesel. He wants a D-15 & D-19 to complete the set.... He can find about any part He needs still from gears to electrical parts. Might not be cheap but He can get it.
