Hello, I need help. I lost fifth gear in my Dodge 94 Ram pickup. I discovered the problem today when I tried to fix my speed sensor. Apparently, the nut that holds the 5th gear on the main shaft has come loose. The transmission is a NV 4500. I have been reading all day about how to fix this and I am confident that I can fix the problem if only I can find a unique tool. I need the special socket that fits over a round nut with 4 grooves and I need to torque it to 300lbs. I know I need to replace the nut but the main shaft appears to be undamaged as the gear is still a press fit.

Can anybody direct me to where I can possibly buy this special socket? According to the drawing of this tool I found off the internet, it is a tear-drop shaped, stamped socket in which I can put a torque bar on the small end. As I live rurally, I have called every transmission shop within a hundred mile radius and they all want around $700 to fix this problem. I believe I can fix this myself. Does anybody know of a website or a tool company that makes tools like that? Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everybody !! I got all the parts and tools coming- I will let you know how it turns out. The tools cost more then the parts- seems to be a common problem. Thanks again-mike

mike,

The half-splined mainshaft on the NV4500 is the culprit for 5th gear failures. The real fix is a fully-splined mainshaft. I went ahead and had mine fixed when I upgraded my clutch. Call the guys at Standard Transmission, they have everything you need to fix it for around $300

Just out of curiosity, do you use the cruise control a lot? A guy told me that his 5th gear nut had come loose twice, he said the constant cycling throttle load of the cruise was to blame. Or that is what the mechanic said caused it.

That"s a common problem with the NV General motors tranny.A friend of mine has put 3 gears in his.it cost him $500 to get the last one fixed. He bought a tool from Mac tools, don"t know what it cost.

Hi Mike,

Have you checked with Snap On? They usually can get you any darned tool you need.

They are one heck of a transmission and very seldom fail, but one of their little bo-bos was that the big shaft you are talking about would take a bend and set up a vibration. However, if yours was running smooth, you should be okay.

Do you have a local GM or Dodge dealer near you? They were all issued that socket in their tool kits and sometimes a guy can just "borrow" the tool.

Hope you get 'er goin',

Allan
