I have a 93 F-350, 7.3D 5 speed, 105Kmi. Last fall, the injector pump took a crap on it, so I got another one and installed it. ran great! Until today,,,, it still runs and drives, at an idle it has a every once in a while miss to it, has no real power, not like the old pump had,, you can hold it to the floor, and it will smoke and kill every mosquito inthe area! it flutters when it does this,, not smooth black diesil smoke pours out the exhaust, I think way too much. Pulling a load, it smokes, lacks torque, but still goes down the road. Milage sucks,, maybe 3 mpg if Im lucky. Its very hard to start in the mornings, glow plugs work, but I have to crank and crank, and like pump the pedal to get it to fire up, smokes blue for a minute or two, and quits, clears up. Sometimes, when shifting, it will take off and has alot of power, then it fades off, and goes back to usual. very sluggish, smoky. It has brand new filters and new fuel pump. Could it be the torque screw out of whack? turned up too rich, and flooding it? Bout ready to pull that diesil out and put in a 370 big block gasser! any ideas? thanks,,,, Chad

7.3L IDI engines don't have cam sensors being as there not computor controled, they do have a tach sensor though. David

A quick check for air in the system is to replace the fuel return line coming off the pump with a piece of clear hose. This will allow you to see bubbles, if present. Otherwise, temporarily install a new fuel line(rubber line, drawing from a can of clean fuel) at various points in the system. Take it for a drive, see if it runs different. Work along the entire length of the fuel system. This process helped me isolate a trouble spot on an '83 GMC 6.2(would idle forever, but driving would only last 5 to 20 minutes, then quit. Length of time varied with fuel level (5 min @ full, longer as level went down). Turned out the caps' vents were plugged and pump was sucking to the point of vacuum in the tanks, then couldn't pull anymore fuel.)

Also, make sure return lines are not obstructed.

If you're near Monroe, MI, there's a darn good mechanic over thataway, name of Tod, (734)586-8556. He's done diesel work for me before, always gives an honest opinion up front and excellent work.

like one of the folks said,,,go to the dieselstop.com website...be sure to get into the correct forum...if your truck is not the powerstroke, do all you can to get your truck running good. from 94 on up,,they have way to many sensors. i`d almost give my eye teeth for a new 92/93 non powerstoke.i think they are called the idi engine

If its got a turbo, check for a blown or loose intake hose. It may not be that but that will cause it every time.

It could be some type of a sensor problem? I had my cam sensor replaced a little while back. It was making the truck shake and shut off. My friend also had problems with his new Cummins. Some type of sensor was making the throttle do what ever it wanted to. It would speed up slow down and do all sorts of stuff. I'd take it to a Ford garage hook it up to a computer to see if a sensor isn't the problem. They know these trucks better then anyone.

Where and what kind of fuel are you running and have you tested the glow plugs. Are you getting a lot of blow by into intake. I'll try and help. David

Pump Diesil, not off road. green stuff. Yep, put all new glow plugs in when I did the pump last time. it is a NON turbo 7.3 but with that low geared 5 speed, it pulls like a turbo, when it runs good. Whats the deal on the return line? If that is plugged, will it really mess up the way it runs? The pump is not new, it is used, off a good running wrecked truck, it was a 89, it was remanufactured with a date, and milage tag still on it. wasnt very old, or used that much, maybe 15k. I found another problem,, this thing is making its own oil! over full, by about a quart, wasnt before,,, Since I seen that, im thinking a seal in the idle somewhere, or something sticking open. Looking into rebuiling the origianl pump, and taking 2 and make one rebuilt one,,,, not cheap,,,, when it does run good, it is a power house, but when it running bad, mite as well have a 4 cyl. Chad

Chad if your gaing oil you better check injectors one may be bleeding off, or you pick-up pump on side of engine diaphram may be going bad either one can cause your problems, you might get truck to a pump shop and have them check both timing settings on pump and pull and check injectors. If need to Email me directly. David

How is the air cleaner element? Unhook it once and see if it clears up. I don't think it is your torque screw. Will it run clean with no load on it?

Air filter is new, I keep up on the maintenece on the ol Ford. No, it does not run clean, at idle it puffs smoke, and has a occasional miss, makes the engine shake, rev it up slightly, it smooths out, but smokes a bit more,, floor it, and it will really belch out the smoke, and sound like its getting too much. Does it everytime. The old injector pump died from water inthe fuel,, did not break the shaft, but quit pumping. it runs, but kinda erratic ever since. not like it used to, Chad

Sounds like you are gettig air in your fuel system some how. I would not give up on it as they are a real power system when they run good. Most power strokes will run 4-5 hundred thousand miles. Mine is delivering 21.5 Miles per gallon empty and 13 pulling the 6500 Moline on the trailer. I doubt that it is the cam position sensor but it is a popular item that will give you problems. About $100.00 dollar item and 10 minutes to replace. Good luck with it Jerry
