i have a 2 acre garden that i use a 4hp honda water pump from my pond to water it pushes the water 813' to the garden i am happy with the results but i blew the pump on it is pushing the water this far putting too much strain on the pump? or is it just because my pump cost $389 new?

Had a pump for my garden.

Quickly learned it used a heck of a lot of fuel for not much really effective water.

Right now I use several standard lawn sprinklers off the well & electric pump for the house (big well, I don't have to worry 'bout that!)

I'm now starting to put in soaker hose.

Next step (next year maybe) will be to rig up a couple barrels. Fill the barrels from the well and/or use the pump again. Let them slowly drain out via the soaker hoses. Some of the soaker hoses have minimum PSI to work with, so I'll have to be careful to make sure the barrels are located high enough, but it's not onerous.

2 acres is a lot...but

Gasoline = $2.25/gallon

5/8" Hose @ Ocean State Job Lot = $15/50'. (Factory blemishes, etc...)

Couple garbage cans, fittings, etc...$40.

Tiny Drill bit and my time = minimal money

200' of garden rows irrigated with a home-made drip hose would take about $100 and half a day I reckon. Could even time how long it takes the barrels to empty and put the garden hose from the house on a cycle of like on 5 minutes every hour to refill them.

And I know I'll deliver a lot more usable water than I ever did with a $300 pump sucking a gallon an hour of fuel...and needing three or four hours at a shot to really give the garden a good drink.

Granted 2 acres is a lot more area and thus time and hose, and the soaker hoses aren't ideal for everything...

What do you mean 'blew the pump' ? How big of a line are you using ? There should have been performance curves that came with your pump. What do they say ?

How much head does the pump need to overcome (altitude, how high is the hill) in addition to the total length of the pipe.

The manual should give you the performance curves, that is a long run but not sure what type of pump you are talking about, no way to know.

Maybe the inlet or impeller is plugged with trash from the pond.

Those pumps have to be primed.

Just a thought,
