I have a Ford 2N Ferguson system. I have been told it is a 1942 or 44. Out of curiosity I would like to know for sure. The Ford manual says the serial number is stampled on the left side of the engine block. I have two different places with numbers/letters stamped but none come close to anything in the manual????

Lots of strange things happen after 60+ years. It's true the serial number was originally stamped on the left side of the engine block. But Ford N engines are interchangeable. There are several 2N's running around with 8N engines (and serial numbers) and vice-versa.

Below is a link that may help you narrow down the age of your Ford if the serial number makes no sense.

Thanks for the info - I guess I will never really know because parts could have been swapped. I have the emblem of the 42 but I have the radius arms of the 44. The best I can make out on the serial number is 9N148123. Thanks for your help!

Same emblems were used on all 9N and 2N tractors. If you look closely at the Ford oval emblem you might see a tiny "2N" stamped under the Ford script.

Your serial number calls out a '44 2N.

If you crawl under and look at the bottom of your hydraulic pump there should be and actual date stamped on it. At least on 8N's there is of course the pump could have been swapped out at some time but take all your numbers together you should be able to figure out what you have. Of course you know that knowing the date is only good for personal knowledge as all 2,9 and most 8N parts( engine) are interchangable

I know that's true on the 8N but I've never seen a date stamped on the bottom of a 9N/2N pump. I don't know if I'm just not looking close enough or if it has to do with the hydraulic upgrades made when the 8N replaced the 2N.
