My son was to the farm in Johnson county yesterday to do some mowing, and garden watering. He reported seeing a combine running on wheat, about 25 miles west of the Mssouri river and about 30 miles north of Kansas. Just a little early, but I think some of the wheat matures quicker then it used to when I was farming.

Pretty well done around Central KS, actually not as bad a crop as everyone feared with the heat and late freezes. Test weights right around 60 and moisture just a tad dry at 11-12. Quite a range on yields though.

Already done with wheat harvest in reply to Delbert from Lincoln, 06-27-2005 07:37:47
Much of south central Kansas is already done with wheat harvest. Of course it is the first area in the state to start cutting each year.

Crops better than anticipated, good test weights, and after rain delays the moisture percentage really came down while awaiting fields to dry.

I wish the entire state could have uniform good/great crops.

Just came back from a Post Office run into Tecumseh - saw three fields that not only picked, but they were out picking up straw bales.

I seen combines havesting corn in mid April 2005. East of Highway 21 between Kincardinenand Port Elgin. About 5 miles inland of the east coast of Lake Huron. Of course the corn being harvested was 2004 crop that had stood and dried through the winter. Stocks had stood the whole winter with the cobs on. No storage or drying fees, made out better than those who slogged through the 2004 fall mud.

Friend of mine used to rag me about harvesting two crops of corn in one year; 40 acres right on the highway that I shelled in March a couple of weeks before planting "that" year's..... .....

I THINK I asked you this before, but - just where at in Johnson County is your farm? We're about 2 west and 1/2 south of Tecumseh. Haven't seen any combines yet, but passed a couple of fields just west of here that had been picked. Most of the guys I talk to are getting ready to go this week.

Galen; I answered once, but I don"t see it on board, so computer must of ate it, or I pushed the wrong button or something like that. I will try again.
If you are looking for my place via computer and terraserver or ultimat map or some such program. Longatude -96.08060 Latitaude 40.49871 Look for a long narrow strip. The squigly lines in the aerial views are trees planted on old terrace and conture lines. There is a lot of pine and cedar in there. If looking for it via pickup truck go north from Cambells corner to road 736. Turn east. Stop and lock in front hubs. You got about 1/4 mile of gravel to do this. Go east 5 1/4 miles to 62630. There are 3 stretches of that road that have never seen gravel, and 4 center pivots that the owners are not too carful about shutting them off, and in one place there are two across the road from one another. That road is known locally as "The buffalo Trail". When we go with the car, we go thru cook, then 3 east, 1 south, 1 1/4 east, north side road. I think it is 8 miles from 136, but would have to see map and count them off to be sure, and if I put up map, I would loose typing again. Delbert

There was one for sale 2 miles west of us for quite a few years. That the only one I know of around there, other than burnable board piles. That one finally got sold and moved and the site leveled off. That was probablooy a pretty decent house. Back 60 years or so ago, a tornado came thru and took that place. That house was built, I"m thinking about 46 or 47. Course a lot could have happeded to it in that time. Delbert

This house was about 1 mile south of cook and 1-2 east somewhere. You'd be just about 3/4 mile from Nemaha county about 6 miles from brock then? Graf used to be somewhere over that way, too (south west of you 5-6 miles, or so.).

Yep, that house was 2 miles east and 1 south of cook, if you took the automobile road. You"ve got us right 3/4 mile from county line. Near 70 years ago, dad used to sell grain, wheat and oats to the elevator at Grafr. I used to ride along and get out at the general store, which was on west side of street and maybe a block north of elevator. MOther would give me a list of things she needed for the dinner and lunch for the threshing crew, and I would buy them and the driver would stop and pick me up on the way home. Its about 6 miles to the site of Graf. Then there were also free outdoor movies on Sat nite, but wife is calling supper, so I better not get started. Delbert
