I have a pond that's about 3/4 acre it is getting covered with moss. When you wade in it is full of sea weed. What is the best way to clean it up? My dog jumps in several times a day I've read some people use round up How much & how to apply it Thank you for any help

Copper Sulfate and grass Carp Larry... or just take a bath in it. That should kill most pond life and blind the rest. :? )

For several summers when I was a teen ager I worked for the Game and Park Commission Fishers division. We used copper sulfate in the ponds to keep growth down. It didn't harm the fish and killed the planktonic growth. Warning this stuff can stan concrete and kill trees. But there is also several other products that work.

As I recall Rotenone (spelling is correct or close)) will deplete the oxygen in the water and the vegitation AND ANY TRAPPED FISH will die due to lack thereof. Your ag store should carry it.

Couple of points:

1. Don't do the whole thing at once as you need to allow the fish a place to go when you are treating a portion. I think the label says no more than 1/4 of the area at one time and tells you what the gestation and waiting period is. The vegetation merely sinks to the bottom; fish float. Ha!

2. If you deplete your pond of all vegitation, any fry fish will be at the mercy of any preditor fish and next years harvest could be wiped out in a matter of days.

Hi Larry,

Roundup works great on aquatic vegatation. I was told by a county extension agent to use it instead of Rodeo. Rodeo is the same stuff as Roundup, but marked for use in water and much more expensive. When using Roundup, it will only kill weeds above water level like cattails etc. Only kill about 1/3 of the weeds at a time as the decaying vegetation will suck the oxygen out of the water and kill your fish.

For below water level growth, the Blue Dye is supposed to limit the suns penetration in the water and help to alleviate algea growth. Don't know if it works, never tried it.

For the "sea weed" there are pellets you can scatter in your pond to kill it. Don't know the name of it, might try a Google search.

Your county agent could lose his position for that recomendation. Better not broadcast what he says 'cause he is trying to help save some money.

Without fixing the problem (nutrient load most likely) you will not really get rid of the prob, only temp fixes....

Roundup is not labeled for use on water & would be a real offence that I could get charged with where I live. And yes the county does pull us farmers over & check out licence, wind speed, & label following stuff so this is not a 'pretend' caution, one can get in real trouble for this where I live.

There is a glysophate product made for use on water, I think 'Rodeo', and is what you would want..... .
