Years ago Eatons said they were going to make hydrostats lines rated from 4HP to 400HP. What rating turned out to be the pratical limit? I know efficiency becomes a cocern as the more Hp they are used for.

Some of the large tile plows run a 425 hp cat bolted up to a couple hyd pumps. All hyd. It will take all that engine could give plus more.

The tile plows use hydraulic drive so they can steer to follow the terrain level. They don't want to sink the plough in a full 6 ft to cross a ridge or knoll. Tile that deep don't drain the surface as well in heavy soil. Of course tile to shallow isn't good either. The hydraulics allow full power to still be applied to the tracks during turns. Keeps from spinning out and getting stopped. Saves allot of clutch/brake wear from making so many turns under heavy load. Of course efficiency doesn't compare to a planetary transmission with a lock-up torque converter. Burning some extra fuel does beat rebuilding steering clutches/brakes. Didn't the US Army upgrade the steering in the M1-A and later tanks or did that fall through? Instead of steering clutches and brakes. They use a version of the Torsion differential with worm gears. A small electric motor applies some bias and tank turns. No significant drag or power loss. For really large drives in locomotives, off road trucks and ships, electrics are used.

Can't tell you HP but I know a lot of the newer dozers have them and they seem to be working good. Had a friend that had a 953 cat with one in it.

From what I know, Komatsu uses hydrostat's exclusively. The big ones are pushing .....what.... 1200 hp? It's also worth considering that in that power class, the efficiency gain from having infinite speeds is better than dropping a gear, or lugging harder in a higher gear. Also eliminates a lot of steering problems in dozers, as power turns are a lot easier.
Actually, I think Cat was about the last to go to hydrostat's, and they still don't use them on larger dozers. Most manufacturers now use hydrostat's. It's the way to go.

I would really be surprised if the big Komatsu used hydostat, isn't it a twin disc torque converter with lock up clutch? I didn't think it even had differential steer. Cooling a 1200 hp Tier II emissions engine is not easy and adding all the heat from a hydrostat that size would require a huge radiator(s)! But I could be wrong, and I guess that will give me a reason to contact some old friends who will know.

I can't say for sure that the very largest do, but I know of a Komatsu in the area that compares to a D-9, and I'm almost positive that it is a hydrostat. I was watching it work in a strip mine one day, and it had absolutely seemless movement. I was watching him vary speed with no change in engine rpm. Very very smooth. So I can't swear to all of them being hydrostat, but I know many are.

All the combines use them in fact I don't think you can get a gear drive combine now and I would guess the big ones weigh in at 25000#+ using some serious hp. two cents.
