Bored at my job

I have been at my job as a manufacturing manager of an autmotive parts supplier company for 6 years, I have been promoted several times, but it is the same old thing day after day. I want to go into business for myself, but havent found a good area to pursue. I have a college degree in engineering, grew up on a farm and consider myself very business minded. I make great money where i work, but it is not interesting, just making money for a company headquartered in switzerland. When I was younger (I'm 29 now), I had a few small businesses and I found them fulfilling. I could work my own hours (a lot) and be my own boss. I live in a large city in Ohio and just want to be on my own. My wife will soon have a regular job with health insurance and I wonder if this is the time to venture out on my own - but where and what?
I understand I need to do A LOT more research, but do any of you have any ideas? I am open to all fields..... ..

dude, if you have a dream or desire, pursue it. you will suceed. give it your best shot do not quit giveup-i repeat-go go go. i'm 60 and i had dreams and never followed them. so go man!!!!! you will make it. God speed and good luck to you.

Contact the guy called Dixieland below.You will never work in one place too long.You will do a variety of tasks.You will climb up stuff and go into tunnels.At the end of each day when your baked from the sun and totally tired you might even say to yourself "Ghee,I should been a stockbroker."

For me farming is the ultimate life. Used to be a bank manager then in a couple of cleaning businesses. But you have to deal with customers in both those lifestyles, most people are wonderful but then that rotten b.....d comes along and ruins your day. Will never be rich but I plan my own time and have some to spare to work on my old iron. Everyone should strive to be their own boss, if that were possible the world would be a better place.

Sound exactly like me. Same age, same degree, same background and same job type. I'm in grad school working on a degree to change job types. I would like to go back to farming someday. My parents have forbidden me from farming our land. They just don't want me to live the hard life they have had. I have contemplated becoming a mechanic with my own shop many times. I have also thought about a backhoe or skidsteer business. Maybe after I salt away some 401k money and a nest egg.

Hey Mr. Bored; If you are making enough money to live sensebly and save a good chunk,say 10k a year,take your time in exploring your possibilities and start your own business on a part time basis.Change it and adjust as you go.I've been in the same boat that you are in for the last 26 years.Started with this company right out of high school,been here ever since.But the wife and I decided she would stay home and raise the boys so I had to have the "benefit" package for them and the security of a steady job.I've been in part time business for myself all these years and I like to stay busy and work long hours.The draw back is not having time for your family.I can't tell you what to try,I don't know you.Like Sloroll said,follow your heart.Our boys are both within a year or so of graduating from LSU.My advise is; you can stand being bored for a little while,or a long while. Plot your course carefully and pray about it. My hat is off to you for not letting yourself stagnate. Kenny

As I was reading your post, I was thinking "go for it to myself". Until I got near the end.

Being young, or relatively young, and relatively care free makes it a great time to change gears and go in a different direction.

However, you don't have a direction. You don't even have a dream. You just want to go do something else. Which is when I stopped thinking "go for it".

In that case, I'd suggest you spend some time in serious contemplation of what you've got right now, and what you want. A good job is a good job, there's a whole lot of bad ones out there.

Jumping from the skillet into the fire isn't a clever move. Just because the skillet isn't the neatest place to cook doesn't make a change inherently better.

Bored, I have the perfect job. I'm really lucky as I never though I would have a job where I make the money I do and still have time to do a lot of the things I like to do. I'm a firefighter-paramedic. I work a 24 on- 48 off schedule and ever three weeks I get 5 days in a row off so I average a 48hr workweek. I average 9-10 workdays a month. Although some days I get my butt kicked at work some days, every days different. I get to see a lot of things you just would not believe. Some things are funny, some sad, and some you just shake your head. Of course all this time off means I can do fifty bazillion other part time jobs so the chief financial officer of the house has more money to spend!
I do get to play at farming and carpentry so I get a variety. I'm not any where near being a millionaire but I don't worry about food on the table and I like what I do which is about as important as the pay to me. Keep looking until you find something that you can be happy doing. Btw what Oh. city are you near? I'm in Delaware Co.

Are you a professional engineer? Why not go out as a consulting engineer? A friend of mine just graduated a year ago, and he is now interning with an ag engineering firm. He loves it. There is a great variety to what he is doing. I know he held out a while before he took this job, but it's working out well, and in another 3 1/2 years, he'll be free and clear to work for himself where he pleases. That's just a thought. I think you have to find something that you love, an go for it.

What activity could you do all day and night? The type of activity where you look up and it's 3 AM and you thought it would be only 9 PM. Something where you'll forget to eat but that's ok. In other words, find your passion. Then find a way for someone to pay you to do it.

Kinda in the same boat. I love my trade (Tool and die work) but I don't really like my job. I have thought several times of putting in a shop of my own but there are like 10-15 in a 20 mile radius of here so I don't know just how well a new one will do with alot of industry aaround here going elsewhere. Like you I make decent money and have benefits and I guess as long as I have kids at home that is a priority.

Besides I haven't found anyone to pay me to ride my motorcycle or sit a tractor shows all day...LOL!!!! but I am still looking!

Jeff, I have done tool& die work all my life, Co-owner of a shop since 1992... I love the work, but the business sux. The only exception is one customer, Family-owned business, good Christian folks.... If all customers were like them, business would be like a dream.. The big companies are another story, I think they have seminars on how to screw & cheat vendors... With the big companies, I often spend more time chasing payments than the job took.. after a while, you learn how to price jobs....LOL..... Recently we quoted a job, & offered to cover repairs for a year, Customer said they were getting it done in China for half the cost, but wanted us to warranty it..... they can rot in HeQQ for all I care.....

I worked in 4 different Tool shops around Detroit. All are now gone. The Chrysler factory I worked in is gone. 4 out of 5 GM plants I have worked in have been closed. Come to think of it, I shouldn't look back!!!!! lol Easy.

That"s a tough question to anwser because only you know what you enjoy doing. I am a industrial electrical contractor that I enjoy but I only take contracts I can manage instead of it managing me. That way I have time to do a lot of other things in life like restoring old Farmall and John Deere tractors, farming, and playing with my grand children. If you know of a business you would enjoy start from scratch and build it yourself.

Try installing vinyl siding. Outside lots of work rewarding fair pay not a lot of money to start. Need a break, and some ladders, pickup a little, b s to sell a job you will be busier than you want to be. Also install windows, rain guttering. etc.

Just yesterday on the local call-in radio "Trading Post" program there was a ideal setup for a business. A Lady was offering to sell her deceased husband's seamless gutter business. Included was a forming machine, 8 rolls of material, tools, ladders, scaffolds...all for $2000!
If I was changing jobs, I would look into something like this. The price I was quoted for new gutters on our home would have easily paid for this setup.
