I have a 410 John Deer backhoe that will not go into forward, and the bucket seems to be weak. All so the bucket and the leggs on the back will not stay up, they leak down even when it is running. Any ideas of what this could be would be a great help.

The hydraulics start at the transmission. You need trans pressure to feed the hydraulic pump. Start by testing the transmission pressure. Should be 135 to 150 psi in forward and reverse. If low or no pressure in forward range, check the reverser linkage for moving the linkage at the reverser control valve. You should hear the ball detents clicking when the lever is moved with the engine off.If it doesn't click ineither range. look the linkage over for problems. If it still has low or no pressure. remove the floorboards around the clutch pedal to see if the pedal comes up a little higher and changes the pressure reading. If so look at the roll pins in the clutch shaft that operates the reverser clutch valve. This shaft is the one that runs across the front of the reverser housing fron the pedal to the control valve. If the roll pins are worn the linkage won't rotate the valve far enough to send pressure to clutches. Finally if you still don't forward, the front clutch pack or sealing rings at the front clutchpack are leaking..good luck

I thought of another place you might look. If the trans pressures fluxuate widely from idle speed to wide open throttle. Take a look at the filter relief valve. [ plug on side of transmission case above the vertical hydraulic filter.]If there is a small chip of crapola stuck in the valve the trans oil will dump back to sump, instead of powering the transmission and hydraulics..
