Lots of good advice, but you're the only one that can know what suits you best. Shep,FL suggested the Dave's Picks site., and Bill Drew suggested Steve's Digicams. Both are excellent, but Dave's is nice because it is broken down by categories of needs. Just to complete the trio of good review sites, DPR at>Link

I agree with Coloken - number of megapixels isn't everything. If you're just into snapshots, not enlarging a lot bigger than snapshots, and not cropping smaller areas then printing, that's generally true - 3 MP will do. If you anticipate enlarging and/or cropping, you'd often like lots of pixels so you still have sharp pictures when you just take a fraction of the original - try 4-5 MP or more.

I also agree with Coloken that digital zoom is meaningless. It's essentially digitally adding pixels between the others that are calculated based on the ones on either side. In general, the higher the digital zoom you use, the poorer the picture quality.

On the other hand, I always tell folks to not ignore high optical zoom! You'd be amazed how much better pictures you can take when you can compose and frame with the zoom control rather than walking to a different position. Also, higher zoom makes for the best candid shots - like of kids or animals. Tractors don't mind if you get close! :)

My son has the Canon A400 that somebody suggested and loves it. Smaller than a pack of cigarettes, point and shoot, movies, lots of nice features. I bought my daughter an Olympus with 10X zoom, and it is an absolutely wonderful camera!

I tell folks to first decide how much you are willing to spend, then look for a camera with the most of what you want or need up to that amount. If you get one with rechargeable batteries and you take a lot of pictures, buy a spare. Also, remember, the more pixels, the bigger the storage card you'll want.

Don't overlook the Fuji line. I think they might offer pretty good value for the price - especially at the mid to higher end. Can't go wrong with Canon or Nikon. I don't like the Kodak cameras at all. When I was shopping for my most recent camera, it came down to three roughly comparable cameras: Nikon, Fuji and Minolta - but that was for my needs and not necessarily a match for yours. Nikon had by far the best macro capability, but most expensive. Fuji had a nice feature set and some interesting extras for the lowest price of the three, but the Minolta had the best all around match to what I wanted.

I personally have a 5 MP Minolta Dimage A1 that's now a couple of years old, but it does everything I want it to do. I bought the A2 - the upgrade version - for general use at work and have not been a bit unhappy with either.

Long-winded, but I hope it helps some. Incidentally, I earn my paycheck as an imaging scientist, doing image processing and analysis on digital images, so have some experience with digital cameras of all kinds. But the paycheck job covers the cost of hobby farming a few acres of grass hay with a MF35 diesel, very old New Idea sickle, Ford side delivery rake and JD 214WS baler...a very multicolored stable,! :) Often it's a lot more fun than the paying job.

A Canon power shot A400 would be good also 3.2 Megapixel ,2.2x optical zoom.

Do yourself a huge favor and get a camera that you can plug in and charge the battery. It makes life so much simpler. Bob

Have Kodak and it is user friendly. Kodak's get good reviews for ease of use. I would get as many megapixels as you can afford. I would use printer off computer. You can get a good photo printer for $150.00 with the new inks that last for 70 years plus.

After a fair amount of research, I bought a Canon PowerShot A95 a few weeks ago. For roughly $300 at Buy.com, I got the camera, a 500meg card and 4 AA NiMH Energizer batteries and 15 minute charger. We love it.

Epinions.com and Amazon.com are good places to read reviews from other people. I also did some research at consumerreports.com.

I have a Kodak EasyShare, not sure of model # but it has 10x zoom with a premium lens, 4megapixels, and it takes videos too. It is a well made, easy to use camera; I have had zero problems with it and know of two others with the same camera, also zero problems. You can get a memory card cheap--I have a 256 mb, holds about 300 pics at a time, and it was $14. I bought the Epson PictureMate printer. The cost per print is about 19 cents, and it is real easy to use. The prints look as good or better than 35mm prints, and you just take the memory card out of the camera, stick it in the printer, tell it what pics to print and "wa-la", you have your own photo lab. The printer doesn"t even have to hook to the computer. It was $199, but got a $50 rebate to bring the price down even lower. I figure I can sit at home in my underwear and print those pics I want instead of running to WalMart (saves gas, plus I always end up buying other stuff I can"t resist).

Good luck.
Sony makes a digital that takes cd-r"s, if you like your floppy disk version that is the next step.

I would not suggest a Kodak. I have a cx7530 and it has been in for service more than I have owned it. The first problem was the lens would not retract. No problem, went online troubleshooted the problem and had to send it in. Kodak said there was a 5 working day turnaround. After a month and a half I started asking where my camera was. Kodak said that it wasn't there problem, I was to contact the camera repair. I contacted them and after a couple of days, got an email that said the part for my camera was on backorder. They also said I could wait on this camera or get a refurbished one as a replacement. Well, that camera was only a couple of months old. So I decided to wait. Get camera back. Check to see that it turns on. It comes on to first screen and that is it. No picture no nothing. I am going to get my money back and buy something else.

I have two digital camera's one an older HP PhotoSmart which using the name smart in the name was a stupided move. It ate batteries ,slow download of pictures to computer. Menu for selection where all on the little screen on the camera. I like to have some selections on the camera and not go thru the menus to find flash off.. Warning about buying one of those package deals "buy the camera and get the printer for free", Check the cost per print a photo, some cost more per picture then having them developed at the store. Thats where they make the money on those deals(special paper, special printer cartrige). Next visit online support for the mfg. see what kind help they provide, what type of downloads and contact numbers. another thing is they will offer you a extend warranty. ??? If it make you feel better get it because that's what most of them end up being. You will need to ask your self would you pay an insurance company that much?

There are much better cameras, than a KODAK. We

can not get any help from them , none at all. You spend the first 20 minutes listening to a recording . FINALLY you are trying to understand some foriegn voice. So you hang up hoping to get some kind of help the next day but it is the same lingo.

On my desk is a Kodak Easyshare DX7440 that I bought my wife for Christmas with the printer and all the other stuff at Circuit City. This is one really nice little camera. The uses for it are well beyond what we would have thought. Today I needed parts for my Ford and couldn't go myself so I took digitals of what I needed and the wife took it to the parts counter and just "reviewed" the pictures for the guy on the camera screen. Kodak has been making cameras a long time.

Check the Steves digicams site. Also I believe the July issue of computer shopper magazine has a cover story on digital cameras. I have yet to read it though.

You'll probably be satisfied with any of the "name" brand; get one that uses generic..... .AA or whatever..... .batteries. I've got a Fuji which works great; recently bought a photo-printer; probably only print about 5% of the pictures we take, but sometimes you like to hold the picture in your hand; can't tell the prints from what we used to have developed. Have got a good 35mm camera; haven't used it since buying the digital.

thurlow,

I might suggest a good alternative to printing your own pictures. This may not work for you since you have already invested in a printer, but during my research I found this to be the most economical. I upload my photos that I want prints of to Walmart. At $0.26 per 4" x 6" print, I can't go wrong. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I would have needed to get at least 1000 photos out of a photo printer to get the per each cost down that low. Their site is user friendly and the best part is you can send them to any store in the country and avoid postage. This works good for me since the in-laws are in Myrtle Beach and we're in Maryland. I upload the photos, pay with a credit/debit card and in 3 or 4 days they pick up the photos.

You mentioned the percentage of pictures that you print, that's the greatest benefit of the digital camera. I take tons more pictures than I used to and only print the ones that I really like. No more paying $8 to develope a roll of 25 photos that I really only wanted 5 of. In 3 years, we have taken over 2000 photos yet with a 35mm, we would not have taken 200. I still have not spent as much on prints as I would have with those 200 photos either.

On the batteries, I use NIMH(Nickel-Metal-Hydride) batteries that are rechargable. They don't last any longer, but you can charge them well over 100 times. They are very expensive, but you get your money's worth in the long run. We bought about 6 of them with a charger 3 years ago and they are all still kicking. I carry 2 extra pairs in the camera case at all times just in case. Actually now that I think about it, those batteries last more like 100 pictures.

Very similar experience; bought a charger..... for the NIMH AA batteries..... when we bought the camera. Have done the Wal-mart on-line thing; just wanted my on printer (my office printer does a pretty good job, but it's slow and the process has to go thru the computer); it's self-contained and can be carried to family reunions, on vacation, etc. Cost per print for the photo printer is supposedly 29 cents..... (of course, that doesn't include cost of printer) using their paper and ink; should be cheaper by shopping around for ink. My brother has a similar camera and puts the images onto a CD and reuses the xd card. A one-thousand image (at low resolution) card only costs about 25 bucks, so I've chosen to keep the images and buy new cards; have no idea how long the images on the card will last; have any idea?????

have a Kodak easy share CX6330. Been a good little camera. used it last year at the drag races in St Louis was up about 25 rows, took good pictures of the cars on the track. Got a 512mb card in it, can take over 500 pictures. The biggest drawback to mine, it loves batteries, it will use a set every 40-50 pictures, may be I am a tight a$$ and buy cheap batteries.

Try some "Energizer E2"...yes they cost more, but picture per picture cost is cheaper than the standard AAs..... .The rechargable ones are no good in my camera a (KodakDX3900)3.1 megapixel...I wont be buying another Kodak anything...had a problem witch turned out to be a part left out of the docking piece...I had to buy the missing part and the Kodak people treated me like *h@#%&t---not good. There are a lot of options out there, but make sure you don"t get a dirt cheap off brand. The wife and I got one when they first came out. Never has done what you would expect out of a digital camera.

I've had this old Canon since forever and it still works pretty good, I guess.

Been tinkerin' for three days on this old John Deere grain drill. So far, it has cost me $1.15 for a little spring inside this roll-lift.

Anything over 3 megapixels will work just fine. The Kodak cameras are fine as far as user friendly and quality of picture. We use them at my work (heavy construction) and have over 30 of them. We have little to no trouble with them and the pics are fine. The only complaint that I have about the Kodak is that they are slow to save the picture on the card. I have a Sony that will snap pictures at 5 MP all day long as fast as you can click. Not much difference in the picture quality just user preference.

Which girl is the prettiest? Depends on what you are looking for
I am not too hot on Kodak..bad experence a few years back. Don't know who makes them now. No way to go wrong with a Canon. I kind of loved the 300 that step daugher was using last week. 3X and no bigger than an egg. My self, as an outdoor person, I use an old Olympus 10 power with image stablization. No matter what you get, get a memory card reader to plug into computer. No hooking up camera to computer to download pictures. There are some great pictures posted here and lots of advice...Allan for one does a great job. O yea, megapixcels ain't every thing and digital zoom means very little.
