My 9N starts right up and runs for a good hour or so working hard, then just stops dead. Won"t start up for close to an hour. I have checked fuel, Looks good, could it be the coil that is overheating? new plugs, rotor, dist, all installed new.

Dude..... ..there are 4-common runtime issues with the squarecan frontmount 9N-Engine.

1) runs for about 1-min and quits, bad condenser
NOT yer stated problem
2) runs for about 5-min and quits, clogged fuel filters (3 of them)
NOT yer stated problem 3) runs for about 15-min and quits, gunked up ignition switch guttz NOT yer stated problem 4) runs for about 1-hr and quits; restarts after 2-hrs or overnite cool-off
Sound like yer problem? BAD SQUARECAN IGNITION COIL

Heres the deal, unfortunately the squarecan ignition coil is NOT as robust as we'd lik'em to be and engine heat, external heat, excessive ignition amps from by-passing the "infamous ballast resistor" will cause the insulative tar to melt and short out some of the coil winding and WEAK SPARKIES. When the coil has a chance to cool-off, the insulative tar hardens and now yer coil is making barely adequate sparkies.

Do I haffta tell ya? REPLACE yer squarecan ignition coil. And DON'T BY-PASS yer "infamous ballast resistor" in a miss-guided shadetree mechanic's search for hotter sparkies and eazier starting 'cuz you'll just melt yer coil again. Remember the 6-volt MANTRA: "keep'em clean, bright, and tight"..... ...respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed 9N sparkie-meister

the coil is on order. will let you all know the results soon. Thanks to all. Tractor back in upper michigan, and I'm out here in sunny San Diego. But it's in good hands with a fellow 8N tractor owner.

New Points and condinser? Check for voltage after problem begins. I've had this problem before which ended up being an old wire that once heated conducted through the plastic. This wire was the one that runs from the coil to the points. This wire would ground out once it was warm let it cool and would work again.

You could part answer your own question by checking for spark immediately after it stops. Good strong blue spark would indicate problem is in another system, none (or weak and/or yellow) might indicate the fault is in the ignition system. If ignition system is bad, check out voltages to make sure you have voltage at the coil with points open and design current through the coil with points closed. If all checks out good, check for a spark on the HT connection from the coil. You should be able to eliminate/pinpoint the wiring, switch, battery connections, etc as you proceed, but first of all check what is happening when it actually stops and maybe let us know what you find.
