If I have a tractor with loader that say weighs 5000 pounds, with 16.9x28 tires on the back. Is this going to rip up lawn? Even if I put turf tires on, will it still rip up my lawn?
What causes lawn damage? Is it the weight? or the Ag tread?

You would need turf tires at least 3-4 times wider than that size to keep from rutting or tearing up sod most turf tires around here are very wide on larger equipment . But you could look for some old aircraft tires and adapt some wheels for them.

Is less likely to rip up your lawn than typical lugged AG tires, thats for sure. The tread on turfs can put noticable compressions in your lawn for short periods of time, but then again it's the weight of the tractor that's gonna compact the ground. I see smaller tractors working "sod farms" all the time, running healthy widthed turf tires for a reason, they are less likely to tear up their product (income). 16.9" sure sound pretty healthy to me, much wider than the ones on a 950 Deere that I use nearer the house. It's a smaller tractor, with loader tipping the scales at about 3000 lbs. It hasn't tore up my lawn, but packs it down. The 3 ribbed fronts have a tendency to cut in somewhat. Has 28"x12" turfs in the rear. The more a tractor weighs, the more likely it's going to compress or compact ground, period. I'd say that your tractor's gonna float about as good as can be expected, but no guarantees from me.

Put some lugged AG tires on it, and the wife will be chasing you around with a skillet for what they'll do to your lawn.
