My 42" scotts (made by John Deere) lawn mower that I bought three years ago stopped working this weekend. The hydrotrans went out on it. It is a true torq model with a JD part number. Cost is $495 for a new one. Since this thing only lasted 3 years I am considering moving to one of the older better made lawn tractors.

Could someone provide me with info on what the best used lawn tractor brands and models are? I do not want a zero turn and already have a finish mower for my IH 404 that I use for the big areas. I simply need the lawn tractor for the acre of lawn directly around the house.

Thanks in advance!!

I think it all has to do with what you want to do.

If you want a little tractor for the garden the Cub Cadet number series is hard to beat. The trans is from a farmall cub and nearly industractable. The hydros use the same rear but replace the range part of the trans with a hydro unit. This trans is a favorate of the tractor pullers with every part available in the special high strength aftermarket variety. Stock parts are also plentiful. Just look under the back of most pulling garden tractors and you'll find a cub cadet rear. Thst nice green JD is really a Cub Cadet dressed up like a JD.

What you'll also find out is that the older tractor don't have the high end hp that the new ones have for cutting grass. And the new ones don't have the lugging cabability of the old ones.

The old ones will also require more TLC.

Weheel Horse, JD, and a few others also made some real good garden tractors. I'm just partial to the cub cadet.

If you really want a garden tractor that's a tractor look at the new sub-compact tractors. I just got a Kubota BX2200 and love it. 22 hp diesel, power steering, 4x4, loader, tiller and lawnmower deck. All quick attach - on and off in just a few minutes. Even has a cub holder.

I think the John Deere 430 is pretty well known as the best lawn and garden tractor John Deere ever made. All those 400 series from the late 70s early 80s were real beefy.

JD 318s are nice too from what I have heard.

Something you might want to do is search the Sears discussion board on the topic of repair tricks for hydraulic transmissions.

My car repair guy had a new Sears hydraulic mower which failed. The repair I downloaded told him something like to remove the transmission, turn it upside down and let the air bubbles out. The mower has worked very well for three years since.

Hard to beat a Wheel Horse. I've got three, a 1967, 1969 and a 1988 518, plus a 110 John Deer. I went through all of them when I bought them and painted all but the 518. I haven't been to the Wheel Horse dealer in about five years, but the old JD seems to always need something. I've had the two old horses since around 1980 and you can't wear them out. Jim

Were you towing any loads, climbing hills, operating in hot weather or is the operator a little on the heavy side? After operating new equipment or as soon as purchasing used. The trans, engine & rear gets flushed and filled with Amsoil Synthetic. Synthetic won't cure existing problems/damage but it will keep parts from rubbing together and wearing in harsh conditions. The "Lawn Tractors" are a lightweight light duty machine that I will never purchase. A "Garden Tractor" is much beefier.

i have 3 wheelhorse's also. two 1964's and a 1967 hydrostatic. parts? who needs them. its been a good 5yrs or more since i have been to the dealer also. keep the maintenace up on theese old buggers, and they just keep a runnin. dont even bother with the new over rated lawn and garden tractors. i dont see where they need 18-22hp twin cyl on a little lawn mower. i would like to see one of theese new tractors do a 1/4 of what my wheelhorse 877 8hp kohler can do. the new ones a weak and fragile. i think my old farmall pedel tractor had a better rearend than theese new ones do. perry in michigan

consider the older Snapper LT 12 or LT 16. Very good cutting, easy to get parts for and the parts are cheap. Bought an LT 12 3 years ago for $50.00 spent another $80.00 for two innertubes, belt, blade and drive disk. On is 3rd season of cuttin now

It's hard to beat the old Wheelhorse. I bought one years ago to haul a stone wagon around. It looked like it got hit with a morter round but ran for along time before it "expired"

The older Cadets were great - last for ever! Now they are made in Korea (Daedong), and aren't much better than an MTD.

Like C hess says--Wheelhorse. I've got two of 'em and can easily buy parts whenever I need..My mother-in-law has a Ford lgt-14 and has no trouble getting parts for it either, although sometimes the dealer has to order them...

The older wheel Horse was a good one, but I'm not so sure about the newer ones. Looked at them last year, but bought a Cub Cadet instead. The older Cadets and JD lawn tractors are pretty reliable too. Stay from the smallJD lawn tracotrsthough. Neighbors each have one and the front axles are a very weak spot, and expensive to have repaire by dealer.

I am one that is a belivere in "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR" and have seen it.

our 400JD a 1980 and grampa's 400JD a 76model are still working. yes we had minor problems but they still are.

I know the tranny on some of the 111 type jd's were not great.

and I was thinking that cub cadet was also under the MTD banner....
