What is heavier in lbs? 67" X 16ft in 2 x 12x 16' treated lumber, or 1/4 " diamond plate steel?
I need to be as light as I can be....thanks

Hi
I got 315# for Canadian Spruce weighing 28Pounds per cubic foot and
I got 911 # for steel at 490 pounds per cube ft.

I calculated the 2 by 12 at a nominal size of 1.5" by 11.25" by 16ft
I calculated the wood for 6 boards which left 1/2 inch remaining. The weight of that cut off was something like 5 pounds so I did not put it into the equation.

I can imagine picking up 6 2 by 12's with my legs but I can not imagine picking up a sheet of 1/4 inch plate metal that is 16 feet by 67 inches
So the figures sound reasonable.

Well, sometimes you can think about things and they sound good, but really aren't...I guess I'll just stick to lumber...thanks much!..AC

A wood deck on a trailer may not last as long as steel but it will still last a very long time and the wood deck does not get as slick when wet and is generally much nicer to work with. You can actually nail down some cleats if needed to keep your load from moving around. You can't do that with steel.

I second that, Rusty- I just finished putting a new deck on my trailer yesterday- it was 2 X 6 Douglas Fir, and lasted 10 years, sitting outside in rainy western Washington. The wiring was also shorting out, so was a good time to do a complete refurbish. Guys I've talked to with steel decks wish they had wood- gets slick with oil drippings, hay polishes it up to where it is very hard to keep load from shifting, etc.
