About a year ago I posted looking for information on the national corn picking contest that used to be held in the 50's and '60s.

In October 1960, Presidential candidate John Kennedy spoke to about 70,000 farmers in Sioux Falls South Dakota at the NCPC.

In 1964, there was one held in Adrian,MI. Besides regular pickers, picker-shellers started to make their debut in the contest.

I have no exact info when these were no longer held, but I would guess by 1970 they were out of the picture as combines becane more popular.

Any one here in attendance at either of the events or any other NCPC and can educate us about this part of our nation's agriculture past?

My dad picked in a state contest in Indiana some where along about 1958 1960. It was held on what was know as Arabian Acres on US 40 near the Wayne and Henery count line. Can't remember the exact year but I know dad had a 227 JD picker. The dealer installed spiral rolls in it for him. He had it on an A at the time, later he traded for a 630 and used it for the picker, that would have been early 60 just before the new generation models came out. The day after the state contest they held the national on the same farm. I remember our neighbor, George Setser won the state contest that year and several other years. He had a New Idea with the husking bed that had the dolly wheels mounted on a Cockshutt 35.

Thanks for the response Bob. I may just have a picture of that contest. I have a whole slew of old New Idea magazines with pictures as they were big proponents of this contest.
By the way, I am from northeast of there, Randolph County, and another neat thing, we have a 630 also. I will check on the name George Setser in my literature. One picture had a Cockshutt with that 301 picker (bed wheels). I am doing this research for the New Idea club I belong to based out of Coldwater (about 35 miles from here.)
Thanks

I know what you mean about 200+ bu corn... our combine has never picked anything like that here in Indiana and I know most pickers never have and were not built for it

as for contests--- my grampa's competed in the county contest as young men-in the 30's-- mom's dad won, dad's was second--- oh this was by hand... (neither had any kids at the time)
